Hi all, I've had a 200tdi disco engine fitted to my 90, I've got myself the new sender from Steve parkers but it still showing just outside the red has anyone had the same problem ? or any ideas what I need to do next, do I need a new gauge ? if so were from
regards

I brought one from paddock prc6663 the other day...

I had the disco 200 tdi green one in before and IF i could get it up to temp on a long run on the motorway a road ect at 60-70 (with no radiator) it would get up as high as just under the red...

I looked about on google last week trying to find a definitive answer and its all over but i went to paddock and spoke to my mate bob who agreed with what i thought i needed PRC6663, so far i haven't even seen it go to half way, but like i say it very rarely gets up to temp anyway for me..

Could be a few things. As always. I'd start with making sure the battery negative strap has nice clean terminals and remove and wire brush em to make sure. Same with the engine earth strap. With that eliminated I would use a multi meter to test the voltage at the sender and the gauge to make sure there is near as damn it 12v and good continuity. Once electrical is out the way then its mechanical. Could be the thermostat stuck closed, a blockage in the radiator, air lock in the coolant. Does it seem hot? Smell toasty? Any stuttering or bad hot starts?

I too have steve parker pipes on my disco conversion & used the sender they sent through with the water kit.
My temp gauge reads warm within 10 mins in this weather - then continues to rise. Just as it hits the red my stat opens, at that point the needle remains on the lower edge of the red as the radiator helps cool.
Ive checked temperatures using an IR thermometer and my stat is doing what it should at the right temps.

My problem is either sender itself or as already said an earthing issue at the gauge. G'luck & let us know how you get on. PS, I actaully called Steve Parker about just this a week or 2 ago and they reckoned it was most likely an earthing issue ( though if so, wouldn't my fuel gauge also be misbehaving?)

all my pipes get hot, heater works well, its a new radiator, ill check the earth straps and battery earth but like what's been said, wouldn't this effect everything else, it might just be a faulty sender .
cheers

Yes your right, a bad earth strap would most likely give you all manner of gremlins. If all your pipes are hot and its a new rad then I'd agree its just the sender that's "different" or possibly a sticky thermostat. If you really want to go to town then you can observe how your stat opens in a pan of water with a thermometer. Or use a fancy new fangled IR gizmo if you are less of the old school Heath Robinson type.

just to recap, I've cleaned all earth cable's today then went for a drive but its still the same, so I contacted Steve parker again and he's sending out a new sender, if the old one is knackered he says he'll debit my account if this doesn't work ill change the thermostat, then im at a loss, thanks for all your help, chat again soon

I had the same problem. Mine also read high before the conversion. I tried various senders, but the gauge always read high.In the end, I changed it for a Durite temp gauge. Now I can see the exact temp in degrees.

Glad to hear i'm not the only one.

Glad i bought an IR thermometer now.... When first noticed, the thermostat wasnt opening and it was properly starting to overheat. Changed the stat for one from a dealer and all works correctly now (apart from the temp reading just touching the red when its actually just nicely warm!). Look forward to hearing a resolution.
