Im beginning to save for my first 4x4 and I cant decide what would be better a old series or newer Japanese double cab pickup. Id love to afford a defender but with only a few grand budget its not really that viable.
Possible vehicles would be:
109 Series 2/2a/3 not sure which yet
l200 up to 2007
Ranger

This is what I am thinking a series would be more bare bones and basic, need more work but would be a land rover so that means almost anything is possible. I would end up doing lots of short distance trips around the nation maybe even Europe so although drive ability is a factor not to important.
Id only be 17/18 when I get it and I want it to last a few years at the least, probably wont be my first car.
A series is a classic so befits from that.

I got a petrol short wheelbase 2A when i was 18. Still got it. I enjoyed working on it and learning how to fix it, quite simple with no electronics. It's a good way to learn the basics.
If you want to drive any distance then you'll need to consider fuel economy and realise your not going anywhere fast. They don't offer the refinement and comfort of a modern vehicle, but so what? They can be great fun. You've got a couple of years to find exactly what you want!

I'd suggest you take a test drive in either of the choices at hand and make an informed decision.
Obviously the newer vehicles such as the ranger offer creature comforts, refinement and amenities that would have been just a few clicks short of witchcraft in the days a series land rover rolled off a production line.
That said, the older vehicles are more simple to fix when they do go wrong compared to the degree in electronics required to get some of these modern cars sorted.
You can take in all the suggestions we may give on here, but ultimately its all down to personal choice and what you're looking out for in a vehicle.
All the best in your search.

Hi Series vehicles are not the best for long trips if you want a Land Rover have you thought about a Discovery with your budget you could possibly get a Disco 2 TD5 comfort and about 30 mpg.

Do a search on an insurance site cos that might help you make your mind up;)
Usually the more seats ythe more money. You can usually drop on a defender for 4-5k if that's really what you want....
