Nasty ticking coming from engine under acceleration

Hi all,

Got a 1996 Defender 300Tdi 90 and has developed a nasty ticking noise coming from the engine. It is a fast paced tick and increases in speed with revs. If I whack it in neutral while rolling along, it stops completely. It starts after about half an hour of driving from cold, and if I switch the engine off, the noise doesn't start for another 10 minutes. It sounds like one of those electric air compressors they sell at Argos. Non A/C by the way, so its not that compressor.

I'm clueless, so any suggestions would be great.

[RESOLVED]

Took old Dorothy down to my mechanic, he whacked the air filter a few times and it stopped. New air filter and air box mounts and problem solved. Just a bad vibration. Chuffed. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Are we talking inlet or exhaust? Could it just be a gasket? I'll have another check tomorrow to see if it is blowing out anywhere.

Exhaust manifold. May even be warped

OK, lets say it is the exhaust manifold. I understand the turbo is attached to this, so a replacement is going to cost me around £400? I will try and get a video up tomorrow of the noise.

There is a 300tdi engine for sale in the sales section..............................

Haha, didn't know they had salesmen in the armed forces! I'll keep that in mind, but I need to see what my landy mechanic says before I start throwing money around Nice 90 by the way.

Had this a few weeks ago. Gasket on exhaust manifold, last port to the rear of engine.. Sure buster has a how too fix.. Search on this forum or google

Buster has the exact guide for the problem you had. I pray this is my problem or I'm going to have a bl**dy miserable christmas! Thanks for the info!

Only took an hour or so to do, and gasket wasn't that expensive. Got a new exhaust clamp as well the other one snapped when I removed it, as I thought that was were it was blowing. You can tell if its the port as the area is covered in soot. I was lucky with the studs and bolts. Don't take turbo off, just slide manifold back.

Thanks saxman, I will take a closer inspection tomorrow.

Afternoon,

Nice video of the dreaded noise in the link there. Filmed it this morning, seems to be much louder today, and started after just 10 minutes of driving. I fear something may soon explode!

Have you had the rocker cover off and checked the rockers/springs/valve caps???

No, but I can do. Anything I should look out for? I'll put a pic up if I think something looks wrong.
