Just in case anyone else suffers the same thing here are the symptoms and the cure for what happened to me.

In July 2003 TD5 misfired throughout journey home. Change in engine sound, down on power and serious vibration but it still got me 20 miles home.
Checked for oil in Red plug to ECU but there was no sign of oil. Started car again and it ran fine for next three months.
About three weeks ago misfire re-occurred. Got home checked Red plug, still clean, tried restart and misfire still there. Disconnected Maf sensor and misfire still there. Left overnight and it ran fine in the morning for about 8 miles and symptoms reoccurred. Exact same thing next day.

Local guru James Barrington at Garage Barrington in La Cheze ( no affiliation but highly recommend if you're in Brittany) advised that sometimes small bits of metal can get into Injector top plugs and cause symptoms described and that disconnecting them and blasting them clean with brake cleaner or similar might work.
Decided I'd change whole injector loom whilst I was about it as precautionary measure.

No re-occurence of symptoms for the past week and couple of hundred miles.

Hope that may help someone.

Mick

carbon in the oil becomes conductive
I have had some cases where the male and female pins on the plugs the female opens up slightly with heat maybe when he brake cleaned them he removed the carbon build up or disturbed a loose connection

The main problem with the injector looms is that the contacts in the loom side female solenoid plugs get loose in time due to heat, oil gets in there and acts as insulator, that's why in most cases the fault codes triggered by old injector looms are injector open circuit or peak charge long ...if it was about conductivity the codes should have been short circuit or peak charge short.... so are the symptoms cause by oil in the ECU plug, sensor inputs missing or lower than normal due to the oil's insulating capacity... so IMO the theory with metal bits in the connector is not logical nor very possible according to those plugs design
