hi could someone help, my landy is a series 3 2.5 n/a, it started playing up with not starting well from cold it would even run the battery flat as soon as i charged it it would start but was a struggle, now it wont even do that the heater plugs are working as they are new and getting a feed to them, there is fuel getting to the injectors as i cracked them off and fuel came out but its not spraying out only dripping, i tryed useing easy start as a lasting and she fired up with no problems has and one got any ideas and could help many thanks. sam

Dont use easy start, it knackers the engine.

does the engine run for a while once started?, if so then low compression might be an issue, could be caused by worn bores/rings or a knackered valve guide.

if the engine runs for a while then stops it could be a fuelling issue, maybe a leaky seal in the lift pump (sniff the dipstick for diesel), a blocked filter/pipe or an issue with the injector pump, does the engine lack power whilst driving?.

hi, yea as soon as it starts it run fine, and dont cut out, it will start again but only if engine is warm, i no not to use easy start only used it to make sure it wasn't a wireing problem as its got a push start with fuel cut off button but its not that, a while back it was over running i got told it was the injector pump i took it to a land rover place and they fixed it, a few months later this problem started, there is no lack of power in the engine as i say it runs lovly when it will run.

Sounds like it isnt a fuelling issue then.
you say the heaters are working, I'd take them all out and test them one by one accross the battery to make sure they glow, if one or two are out it'll effect starting, if thats not the issue then I'm out of ideas.

ok i shall try that again to make sure they are all glowing they all get a feed as tryed a test light on them, it dosnt go through the resistor block any more as som1 bypassed that, i got a feeling its the injector pump but then again it runs fine when its runnig, thanks very much for your help and time

Are the heater plugs wired correctly, the 2.5 system is different to the 2 1/4

I'm not sure what pump is on the 2.5, but it could be a ve (not a distributer looking thing they use on the 2.25) and there can be a cold start, if there is one wire knocks up the idle revs and the other wire operates an advance mechanism to aid starting, check the wires to these for mank if they are fitted.

I had a similar problem on a Transit engine which I just removed from my Landy. It only had trouble starting in cold weathert, it was not using oil didn't smoke out of the oil filler and had plenty of power. I suspect it's the fuel injection pump. A compression test could be a good idea to see if worn bores or valves could be causing the problem.

the pump does not have a cold start even the 2.5, the heaters on the 2.5 are ok on 12 v, in paralel the 2.25 has 2.5v heaters and these will burne out if conected without a resister

thanks all for the replys, the pump is the otther one not the dizzy looking type, and the heater plugs did have a resistor but that has been bypassed. i reckon it mite be pulling air back as one of the injector seals was leaking so i replaced the lot, bleeding was a nightmare the battery went flat so charged it over night then blead again and it fired up fine, i will try everythink that has been mentiond this weekend and let you all no how i get on many thanks all

An ammeter is a good idea for this situation, I have a boat with glow plugs as soon as one fails you can tell on the ammeter when you pre heat.
Ammeters that have a built in shunt are a bad idea, a remote shunt meter is a must if you have one.
