Hello

I bought a Freelander year 2000 - a second hand car, few weeks ago. I have used the car few times only since then.
Today I have tried to move the car and the engine just won't start.
It makes a funny noise, the engine does not turn and the central locking does not work anymore. To me it looks like the electrics might be the problem. The noise it makes comes from under the bonnet and from the fuse box under the steering wheel.
Anyone knows what might be wrong?

I had just the same

See my post ref clicking noise, Turned out to be the brushes in the starter motor

You can check for a cranking feed to the starter from the smaller female terminal on the starter body. if thats ok when you crank the key(lights up), Its probabley the starter

I removed mine in about 1/2hr and took it to a local car shop that had a sign outside saying starters/alternators repaired

Fitted new brushes for £35

Make sure the remote battery is good on the remote fob

Something about the immobiliser goes down if the batteries flat which may relate to the locking issue

hello mate

i had the exact problem and easy fix

just spray WD40 around the starter motor connections and a little in the stater motor as it might have got really wet or damp and the starter motor sticks and drains the power. just give it a try you never know / it worked for me

I would check the remote battery and the earth straps

I cleaned the earth straps with a dremmel wire wheel there were 2 under the battery tray.

After this mine ran ok for 3 days and then finally gave up the first day the wife went out in it by herself

Ended up with the starter in bits, For what it takes to remove starter, its only 3 x 8mm bolts to remove the end cover and check the brushes

I think it would be worth trying another battery/jumping before you go too far down any diagnosis route. Eliminate the easy cheap option first!

Cheers

Hi guys

well, I don't know how to say this but it was a flat battery. Yeah, I know lol

I have had flat batteries before but no cars behaving this way. Everything on the dashbord was going mad, the engine will not even try to turn ...

Thanks to everyone for the help. I still hope it was a battery fault as I just don't understand how the battery will go flat in a matter of 1 day.
