despite being shamles spam i rekon thats not a half bad idea.

I ws gonna make something similar, but it was going to be out of steel and attached with a hinge to the body.

That way i could add a solenoid when i ever get round to it and join it into my home made but not yet fitted central locking :D

I'm going to nick one off the first person round here to buy it ,,,,,if it's the right colour. :D ... Be like dustcaps, allways being nicked.:)

Actually they are not in production yet. I made 12 of them out of black sample material that I had and they worked great. To order the material I have to buy 1 ton minimum. That would make over 10,000 covers. I am not prepared to invest EUR 3000 just to try it. I wanted to get some input first and see what you thought of them and try to figure what they could sell for. If I did order the ton of material I could probably produce and sell them for between 2 and 3 Euros.

If this is considered spamming - I am sorry. If the Administrator decides to remove this thread - so be it. It is his or her board and they have the right to decide.

I still think it is a great idea - even if it is mine.

maybe if you sent out a few samples you might get some usfull feedback - or maybe even some who wanted to co-invest with you

are you hand milling the materal or do you have a vac forming setup ?

I have a connection to a vacuum forming company and a friend who build tools for them. It was a bit of a process. The first step was to build a tool. I decided that the most efficient for the job would be an aluminum tool. Basically it was only three plates of 4, 5, and 8 mm. Before we could mill the tool we had to choose the material that would be formed, as heating and cooling of different materials produces different shrinkages. This shrinkage had to be calculated before the size of the tool was known.

I needed a soft and pliable material not wanting to scratch my truck, something resistant to fuel and oil and able to withstand extreme temperature ranges. I chose a fire resistant low-density polyethylene (LDPE-FR) as the material. You can bend this material, stand on it, throw it on the table and it straightens back out.

My work lay for me. During a recent weekend I went about cutting and shaping my aluminum plates and screwed them together. I went to a nearby bead-blaster and added structure to the tool. Drill a few vacuum holes and we were ready to roll.

I was able to get the tool onto a machine during the Christmas holiday and formed a limited number of samples. They fit perfectly on tested Defenders from four different model years. I tested them with sprayed water and a few hundred kilometers including some very rough terrain, my 2km driveway. In everyway this thing is a success, everyone loved them and most of my samples are already on friend’s trucks on the road.

I then thought, hey a good business idea, I could easily produce thousands of these things a day but there is one holdup. The minimum order for this material is 1 ton – enough material for more than 10,000 parts. I know a few people that would buy these things but I don’t know if 10,000 people would even be interested in buying them.

I would like to know if you think this is a good idea and would be willing to pay a couple of quid for it. If I see a positive response maybe I’ll go to the next step and actually figure out a business plan. Thanks in advance for your input.

forget about making your own tools and sourceing the raw materials, just find yourself a tame china or macau based forming company, they will make and maintain the tool/mound and specify and source the material for you - they normal just charge a (very low) fee for the tooling

do they fit series landrovers??? i have removed my rear fill tank as i kept damaging it offroad as now have the hole with no filler! this looks like it would save me the job of modifying the body but i have another couple of questions......

1 what colours will they be available in

2 can they be painted

I have no idea if they fit series. The cover is like 118 x 218 mm. If that seems right, I do have a couple extra less-than-perfect parts and would mail you one if you PM me your address. I would only ask that you let me know if it fits.

I now have only black. They could be produced in any color if I invested in a ton of material. Fortunate - they can be painted, unfortunate the paint falls right off. Maybe if you had some paint primer for LDPE it would work. I tried like 7 different glues on the thing and nothing stuck.

Good idea, do you have any connections?
