My freelander has just died

Ok, I own a diesel 5 door 2000 plate Freelander and is sitting on 94 000 and before today has been running like a dream (apart from tailgate water but we know this) Any hoo, went over a speed bumps at work, under 5mph and it just died. Tried to restart it, ignition turns, all the ignition lights come on, but just wont start. If this helps, the TC and the hill decent light stays on, where normally they turn after a few seconds? One of my friends from work says it may be the immobiliser, but am open to any and all suggestions please.
 
I think there's a fuel cut off, which is supposed to operate in a crash.
Maybe the speed-bump caused it to operate.
Should just need pushing to re-set.
Have a look on the bulkhead under the bonnet.
 
Is this a common thing then? only Ive had it four years and this has never happen before, but cant get back to it to check till tommorow because I had to leave it at work.
 
Same thing happened to a mate on a lane the other week....not excessivly rough and just cut out...think this is just a diesel problem and cut out is under engine fusebox

Good, now burn it and buy a proper landrover and dont let it happen again.

Think you might find some dicos and rangies here dafted...please note we all stood well away from RRC while it had a small leak....sorry it might take 15 mins of your busy life but it looks like you have fook all better to do with it. Plenty more if you need any further edumacation

on td4, reset button is at the back of the engine bay to the right hand side as you face the front of the vehicle, just under the fusebox/ecu housing, mounted on the bulkhead, there should be a symbol of a fuel pump with a line through it with an arrow stuck to the bulkhead.

Cheers all, its not the TD4 version, its the L series (the earlier version than the TD4). Will give it press to test tomorrow and let yous know. Thanks for the input gents
 
FFS, I wonder why it is certain indviduals find it necessary to slag of the Freelander. If you don't like it then fine, drive whatever you drive and good luck. However, if you hate it so much then why are you in the Freelander threads?
 
Shamus, the cut out is a good place to start. As a fellow Xedi driver I would be interested to hear the out come of this thread. It could happen to any of us.

same things happened to me once, one my petrol freelander. I had to drive over a kerb at my local tesco cos some numpty had blocked me in and that caused the fuel cut-off to activate. a quick push on the button and i was off again!
 
Ok quick update, nope it wasn't the cut off switch, seam to blow fuse No 6 ACU all the time, could be moisture in a cable causing it to shorten. All I did was go over a frecking speed bump.
Anyone any further ideas?

And to those so called LR owners who put down freelanders, I have only this to say to you......

I learnt to drive in a SWB series 2 LR, I passed my test in a LWB series 2 LR. For over 20 years now, I have been in contact with either as a commander or as a driver in everything from a series 2 all the wayyyyy past the newish wolfs to even a WMIK (Weapon-Mounted Installation Kit) consisting of a GPMG and a GMG in one of the most dangerous places in gods green earth. To have someone who owns LR put down another LR who has probably just drove his round a field in deepest darkest Surrey beggars belief.
I own a freelander because I want to, not because its a fashion statement or for the off chance I may want to cross a puddle.

You tell em shamus..:D ..we get too many tratter boys driftin over to 'our 'side slaggin off the freelander. hope you get sorted soon
 
Firstly, I'm sorry you still have problems. Lets see if we can't help to get your Hippo going again.

Right, it isn't mosture causing your problem. It sounds like you have a cable that has shorted to earth which is supply a critical system.

You state that Fuse 6 is blowing. According to my Haynes manual there are three positions that are refered to as number 6. If its in the engine (high tension) fusebox then there is FL6 (Fusable link) which is a 120 ampre rating and brings the alternator supply into the main bus. If this is blowing then there could be several consiquential problem that we won't go into now. There is also F6 which supplies the horn so I doubt thats the culprit. In the passenger fuse box there is F6 which is engine management. This has got to be the kiddie.

A consultation of the L series Engine Management circuit diagram and a concern grows. This is the main power supply into the engine management unit. Without the ECU the engine is dead. It seems the shock of your speed bump hopping has induced a fault that is shorting something out in the engine management system.

Does your Hippo have ABS? If yes then just read on. If NO then read on anyway but report this back as there is another thing we can try.

Your quest is to check all the wire looms in the engine bay. You're looking for any kind of damage. If you find something then repair with insulation tape. If the cable is mechanically damaged then adjust it so get it away from whatever broke through the insulation. Then replace the fuse and try again.

I hope you find a damaged cable but as an electronics engineer I fear that the problem is more likely to do with the ECU itself and this is a specialist job for a LR shop or a good independent.

Whatever you do, do NOT be temped to uprate that 10A fuse. Don't even think about it. You will fry your engine management system and possibly start a fire. I'm serious about this.

Secondly, good words of support for the Freelander and Landrover in general, although I suspect you din't feel too happy with them at the moment.
