March last year I was heading off on a trip in the Disco, got 200kms down the road and my top radiator hose blew out. Cooked the head etc etc etc. What annoyed me was the low water level sensor that I had installed to alert me to this very problem failed to work. Anyway my wife came to the rescue with our Trusty 80 series Landcruiser and we trailered the dead disco back home.
I ordered a new cylinder head from Paddocks and while I was at it I ordered new radiator and heater hoses, thermostat, water pump, timing belt kit, serpentine belt. Basically I thought that this would be a good opportunity to freshen up the engine. Got the disco back on the road and 2000kms later the dodgy head gasket (see my previous post about this) let go, first symtom was chucking the coolant out of the header tank. Like all disco owners with this problem I went through the checks (which included fitting a new radiator) before reverting to spanner work. Unfortunately the new head had been cooked and failed its anneal test. Anyhow after a long battle with Paddocks, Paddocks finally honoured their warranty and replaced the cylinder head at no charge. I have also fitted a genuine LR laminated metal head gasket this time in the process of fitting the new cylinder head. I fitted new piston rings (and big end bearings) as #3 cylinder bore had some light scuffing which was easily removed with a light hone.
Anyway finally today after months of frustrating delays the old disco ROARED into life. I have removed the low water level alarm system (it is now in the rubbish bin) and I will be fitting a engine watchdog. (see another of my previous posts) This passive sensor monitors the metal temperature of the engine. The company I purchased it from said that by far their biggest customers base was Landrover owners!!!!!
Anyway I am hoping that with all this work done to the old disco It will revert backto its normally reliable self. BTW I forgot to mention that I did clean the intercooler.
