So I finally tackled the mud flap that had corroded away. Let's face it, both rear mud flaps are gone but one is more gone than the other so I decided to do one at a time having limited skills.
Disconnected the battery. Jacked the car up so that the suspension lifted but not the wheel, chocked wheels.
Tried to drill out the bolts but they did not drill out so quick visit tomb and q for hss drills and they wern through nicely but the thing still never dropped off. Used an angle grinder to grind the heads right off and then the flap came off. Couldn't remove the screws that hold the rubber mud guard to the bodywork so I attempted to remove remaining bits of plate with this still in situ. It was tricky but then the plate that the self tapping screws we're holding onto disintegrated and the rubber part came out. I then fashioned a suitable bit of,replacement plate from zinc steel to replace. I tries riveting the old flap back but the holes were too big so went with bolts with square nuts at the backs. this seems to have worked but. I think I will need to paint them to stop them rotating out with time. The top bolt which attaches onto, the floor pan I decided not to drill that one out and leave a captive nut spinning so, I welded that bit on. I will paint the vowels to protect it.
2 newish self tapping acrews were used to secure the bodywork to the rubber and this is we're I need advice. The bracket that flips out from the guard and attaches to the bodywork has previously taken out a chunk,of bodywork. I am not sure if that bit is fibre glass or aluminium. I was thinking of screwing a bit of Zinc plate and securing it to the inner bumper and then screwing the bracketry bit of the flap, into this. What do you think and also is that aluminium ?

If I am reading this correctly, you are talking about the part that is riveted through the rear lower panel that has rotted. It should be hidden the plastic trim. It is aluminium. If it has made a hole, you can rivet or bond (tiger seal) a piece of aluminium over the hole and then fix to that. Photo would help.

That's it. I never thought of that. Could I rivet steel through it or would that be a problem? I have never heard of tiger seal. I willl look into that. Why would there be a hole missing in the aluminium. That sounds like bizarre to me.

Where the steel part fixes to the aluminium you get Electrolytic corrosion and the ally basically turns to dust. When I done my rear mud flaps one side was in perfect condition and the other had a hole like yours.

Tiger Seal is the dogs bollocks for bonding things but just make sure both surfaces are clean and dry. If you use this method steel should OK as the Tiger Seal would be a barrier between the ally. Let it cure and it will never come off.

That probably explains why there isa hole there
Need to make sure the steel and the aluminum never come in contact
