much you can do to the 2.5TD engine?

Intercooler?

Fuel pump tune?

K& N filter? Bit dubious

LPG? And before you say anything you can put it in diesels.

at the end of the day you are messin with a pretty old motor that was a bit fragile in its early incarnations.

yeah your best bet if u can afford to is take it out n put a 200 or 300tdi in with a added intercooler ;)

i havent actually bought one yet, just checking my options before i do.
is the 200tdi noticeably better than the 2.5TD? speed and powerwise?

your not gona get much speed from any defender, but the TDI engine is 111bhp and 195 lb ft compared to something like 80bhp and 150 lb ft for the TD.

Also the tdi has a much stronger block so will cope with a bit of messing eg. larger intercooler, fuel tweak etc.

If you can afford it get a TDI, but bear in mind it is easier and less work to buy a TD with a good chassis and bulkhead then stick an ex disco tdi in there, rather than get an original defender which is messy, needs welding etc.

Look at the overall machine as Chris says you have to weigh up what it will cost overall. The TD is not that bad as a day to day drive, it keeps up with traffic etc. but it is heavier on the juice than a 200Tdi and down on power.
That said , if you stumble on one which has had loads of TLC and it's the same price as a ropey 200 do what chris says......if its a goodun it won't blow up the the day after you bought it and you can take your time looking for a 200 or better yet 300 to drop into a good solid vehicle.
From that point of view you could look for a good NA 2.5 there are lots of ex military ones at good prices, and do an engine swap on that at a later date.
