MPi or TDi?

Hi all,

I am looking to buy my first land rover and have seen two locally for sale.

One is a 2.5 TDi which is in nice condition for the year (M reg) priced at £1990 (open to offers). The other is a 2.0 MPi which is in fair condition (N reg) but is LPG converted, price £1250.

A 2 litre engine seems a little too small to me for a beasty motor like a landy but perhaps someone more knowledgable can enlighten me.

MPG is important to an extent due to the mileage I cover but it is not neccessarily the most important factor.

Which would be the best option to choose, I have done a little research and the TDi seems to be the most favoured.

I am looking for a discovery because I need a seven seater and I don't like the modern MPV's. I currently own a renault estate with seven seats but I want a vehicle that is a little more fun and stylish.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS. The MPi is listed on ebay so if there are any other factors that need to be taken into consideration I can give you the link if that is allowed.

Stuart

the general consensus is that MPi's are crap - underpowered and very thirsty.
the main thing to look for is rust, rust and more rust.

Thanks for the speedy replies guys. You have just confirmed what I have already read. does this apply even with a gas conversion though as lpg is half the cost of petrol. I know you don't get the same MPG with LPG by the way.

MPi's are a bit unnerated in my opinion. About the same power output as a Tdi apparently, about the same running costs too as it goes. They've also often had an easier life, but they ARE crap at towing.

have you driven one?
same power as TDi yes, but zilch low-end torque. you have to rev the balls off em just to get em movin.

hahahahahahahahahahahaha..... sorry couldn't help myself :D

disco mpi = pants
disco tdi = the dogs bollocks .... they dont like going into trese sideways tho ;)

There int gunna be too many 200Tdi Disco's around these day that could be described as the dogs bollox, most are gunna be full of tin worm in prescribed areas & reaching 'beyond economical repair'.

If I was looking for something that would at best last a couple of years or so & found a hi spec Mpi in better than average nick & I din't want to tow anything I'd consider one.

i found the tdi tow better than the 3.9efi rangie cos of power delivery, very comfy on long journeys, good fuel economy cosidering the size of landy, and saved my legs in the unforunate accident (40mph corner impact) thats why i said they are the bogs bollock. o yea i also got £1100 for mine cos of condition :D

I notice that you state that MPG is important due to the mileage that you do?

Please be aware that it will cost you £110-£115 to fill up a TDI Disco, and from that you will get around 550 miles, maybe a little less.

I do around 40-50'000 miles p/a, and I originally bought my Disco as a daily driver. With the frankly **** poor MPG that i was getting from it, I bought a Rover 75 as a daily snotter, and get the Disco as a off-road toy.

Just thought that I would point this out before you buy.

As others have said, 300TDi every time. And as others have said, dont forget to look for rust. Boot floor, sills and inner front wings seem to be the usual places.
