Took the Landy Sheffield to Lanakshire and back today - 540 mile round trip 9hrs!

Had a close shave (i think) between fill ups - my TD4 Auto 02 can do around 450 on a run (33-34) but light popped on before I was expecting it and about 40 miles before a station?

Anyone any idea how much fuel is left at the point the light comes on? I've done 40 miles or so before in this situation (I know its not good..) and I was still running below red by the time I reached Scotch corner and managed to fill up.

I recall watching top gear when all the computers we're saying "no fuel" but they had 100miles plus left in that jag.

had the same sort of problem today in an audi a4 was coming back from sailbury plain and the sat nav was saying 90 mile home the audi trip computer sed 140 left in the tank as soon as we hit the motor way the trip computer dropped right down to 95 we drove the last 20 miles with the trip computer saying 0 :D

I think my Freelanders low fuel light comes on at 13L from calculating it's got max 59L after filling up.

You better be right or there will be many people running out of fuel after reading that! :p

Good point that. Best way to find out is to drive your car until the low fuel light comes on, then fill it full with the correct fuel, then subtract the amount you put in from the known max tank capacity.

If your light don't come on when first switching on the electrics, during the lamp test, don't try the above. :D

Does it take into account whats inthe pipes - must be another 5-6L elsewhere?

I "only" put £50 quid in at Scotch corner so not sure what it would have taken and that was 3/4 full - maybe abouter 15-20 quid at 121.9

I might be doing that "run" again this week so will try from light to full if I get chance. It's handy to know cos running out aint good for car or driver. :)

You'll have to try it and see. I know fuels expensive, but if your planning on running near the low limit on a regular basis, then you should test your car to see when the light comes on. Always handy to know as you could be 40 miles from the nearest pump on a motorway. And they may have run out too!

Running very low is never a great idea as all the crap which normally happily sits at the very bottom of the tank gets drawn in & quickly clogs up the filter.

Last October I was pulling the Pikey wagon ove in East Anglia. I had got to Bury and looked at the fuel gague and reasoned I had enough for Lowestoft. Rolling into Bungay and I looked down and wondered where the needle had gone!! It was below the red line  Crawled onto the Gt Yarmouth roundabout and straight into the services. Hippo was thirsty and took on 59.5 litres

Crickey that was close!!

Remember that early models didn't have a low fuel lamp...

Can you please define an "early model"?

I always see people refer to "early models" and "later models" but that's not very helpful if you have a hippo which was built around half way through the production period of the FL1.

Cheers

Where exactly is this warning lamp? I haven't seen it. 1999 Freelander.
Then again, I don't let it run that low. As soon as the gauge is below quarter full I diesel up just in-case the gauge ain't right.

Maybe not relevant, but yesterday the light came on in my 07 Freely 2 with the computer saying I had 50 miles' worth left in the tank. Don't know whether the light's computer driven or independent though - light remained on even though the computer readout went back up to 56 miles left when the car had warmed up!
