Just for info ................ it may be irrelvant now but there was a discussion a while back about MOT's and coil spring suspension.

I've got coils fitted and it sailed through the new MOT no problems.

Ive also got a front steel bar with 2 spots fitted, no probs there either :)

New EU regulations come into force in 2012. No one currently knows how much of the European regulations will be introduced into our MOT, or how quick the full implimentation will be.. But fitment of none standard parts, HID headlamps that were not fitted to the vehicle as standard are set to be outlawed. Fitting of none standard brake/suspension parts is also mentioned. Fitting of none standard chips to engine managment systems that boost power over and above standard are also mentioned. But as i say nothing known yet as to how much will be taken on board. I have a feeling it will be drip fed over consecutive years to be honest.

We have been over this, it is perfectly ok to upgrade headlights as long as the upgrade meets the legal requirements, coils will also be ok as long as its a recognised conversion, as said before I E mailed VOSA for clarification and that is what they told me. I mean you dont want people running around with there home made kit out of the scrap yard, it seems to be a standard being set for the test and for any mods that have been done. There is still too many death traps running about on our roads, changing to coils as long as its done right does not do this but bad or no maintenance does.

At this moment in time HID headlamps seem to be legal to retro fit in this country. HID headlamps CANNOT be fitted to a new car by a manufacturer UNLESS they have self leveling fitted as standard. That is European law. The connotations are that unless the headlamps self level, any HID convertion WILL be illegal in the new MOT. New L322 Range Rovers fitted with HID lamps have lamp self leveling in addition to the vehicle self leveling of the EAS. VOSA cannot answer you because VOSA don't yet know what the changes will be. They are still being discussed. They can only advise you on present requirements and not the new requirements due to come in next year.

Towing brackets, balls and wiring come in from January. Seen it on my mates VOSA update ;)

what chance that oversized tyres on a 20 motor would be banned, wammers

Haven't got a clue and neither does anyone else. I think if all the stuff being talked about is introduced it will cause a major upset in some quarters. We just don't know. It is about time the government gave some guide lines out to prepare us if there are going to any major problems. Or maybe they want to take certain classes of vehicle off the roads. Who knows. I am sure the testing stations should know something but not a lot is being said. A few incidental things like batteries have to be secure and wiring has to be neat and tidy have been made public. But other than that it's all a bit sketchy.

ooooops sorry - I thought the new one was already in force .............
Does that mean I have top go through all this trauma again next year then .....??????
Damn

I believe a reg that says tyre pressure monitors, if fitted as standard equipment, should be functioning may be coming in 2012 too. Peugeot, Citroën and Porsche 928 owners are probably shaking in their boots! Another expensive bit of kit for the garages to buy I suspect, putting small independents out of business.

I know they want to outlaw reflashed ECUs and the like but how the heck they'd test for it I do not know! You'd have to have some software that knows what every legitimate o/e software version looks like - not really feasible - I suspect just the piggy-back ECU and obvious chip replacement stuff will be outlawed - even then it's not always easy to spot 'em.

Yeah and battery security which has not been included before. Don't know if the European stuff is new legislation or has been in force on the continent for a few years and next year is the final implimentation date. Certainly in Spain you cannot fit accessories none standard to the car or so i am told. If that is what the new stuff is about it is going to cause havoc over here. Unless they name a transition year and even then there could be problems. With what's being banded about, modified cars could become a thing of the past. It's just to crazy to contemplate.

Can't believe battery security is not part of the mot, I just took for granted it would be. If I seen that I would wonder what else was not right, bloody hell a big heavy battery not secured should be criminal. But I did ask VOSA about the new rules and the answer I gave earlier was what they told me. I have heard that motorbikes will have to be serviced at a recognised service station if the EU get thier way, no more home services, if true that would have bigger ramifications for the future. Bloody EU.

hi, have never had a problem with my series, which has a bull bar with 4 spots, and a winch fitted.

I believe battery security could have always been a fail at the tester's discretion, traffic cops have picked that one for years under "construction and use" regs to ticket dodgy vehicles.

No battery has not needed to be secured on MOT. Lots of things are being proposed but only coming through in dribs and drabs. EGR must be fitted and working if fitted as standard. How they are going to check that on some vehicles i do not know. Also how they are going to check for chipped ECUs that Europe wants to outlaw is another moot point. Think the HID lamps are definatly going to be sorted though. To be honest they are a bloody pain. Having been almost completely blinded by them for a few seconds, which was not bloody funny on a twisting country road.
