Took the old girl for mot and the bad news is she failed :( the good news is only on 3 small things :) Parking brake lever has no reserve travel, offside tyre has a cut deep enough to reach the ply cords, nearside brake disc contaminated with oil.I put two new rear calipers on a couple of years ago but they were the cheap ones from paddocks its probably the seals so Ill get another caliper rather than mess about. Is there anywhere else the oil could be coming from?

Thanks Thor, Ill take the wheel off and have a good look. Its only done about 10,000 since I put the calipers on so would have expected a bit more life out of the seals.

Well I took the wheel off and it looks like axle oil running down onto the inside of the tyre.
I read that a blocked axle breather can cause this so I had a look and it looks rusty and looks like its not been cleaned out before [94 disco] Should I try to get the breather off and renew it or just cut the pipe and see if I can blow through it both ways and join it back if it seems to be ok?

Its the hub seal not the breathrt

I just wondered if a blocked breather had caused the seal to fail.
No point changing the hub seal if its going to do it again.
Does anybody know the parts I will need to do the hub seal?
Its a 94 300 tdi .

It was the first seal against the axle that was leaking. A mate of mine helped me do it in return for some work on his roof so only cost me the price of seals £8.00. Got a new MOT now but got a few laughs out of the mechanics when they saw my tail pipe that I had mended with a piece of old cast iron drainpipe :D after the back box sheared off. Still passed it though :)
