Hi all, my defender 90 300tdi failed on a few things but the one that I'm worried about is it failing on emissions.... The tester said bang a fuel additive in it and bring it back, any advice? Also would blanking off the egr valve and cleaning out the intake help? And if you blank it off what do you do with the electronic egr control unit, remover or just leave in place?
Cheers in advance

Definitely remove the EGR and clean the inlet manifold. As for the EGR plug, tie it back and tuck it away. So far as the emissions go, the taxi and bus companies round here use Forte Diesel injector cleaner prior to MOTs, and swear by it.

HTH,
Lew

there are two things i do

No1 i use a new fuel filter and pour the full neat additive (diesel magic is the one i use) into the filter then go for a run in it.

No2 i mix 70/30 diesel/svo and take it back afteragood run so the engine is warm ;)

get shot of the egr, they are crap

Cheers for the input chaps! I'm going to try and do all what you've suggested! I
Like the idea of sticking some svo in the tank! Is putting the additive straight in the fuel filter not like running it neat?
Regards the egr valve I'm just going to make a plate at work and stick it under the egr valve and clean out the intake! Time is tight and I'll do the full conversion at a later date!

I would run the tank down low and put in at least 4 gallons of Shell V Power or BP Ultimate diesel. The extra cost will be cheaper than additives anyway.

These diesels are synthetic, that is manmade, it is not a direct distillate of crude, so it doesn’t have the same contaminants in it in the first place to then go on to burn giving all the emissions.

I use VPower in my 300tdi almost all the time, over the course of 4 or 5 tanks I concluded that I do get better performance and the extra cost (circa £2.50) is balanced out by the extra 20miles to the tank, the engine runs far better - much smoother, starts better when it's cold and when I deck it I NEVER see black smoke, a grey smoke sure but it’s not a dense, which will help considerably in getting you through your MOT.

Another thing you can do is wind the throttle peddal stop out a little so that the MOTer can't give it the same revs, or adjust the throttle linkage at the pump by winding the adjuster a little so that with throttle flat to the floor it maybe only gets 80%.

Cheers for all the advice! So I'm blanking the egr valve, removing the air filter, cleaning the intake manifold Iv put 70/30 diesel/svo in this morning I'm going to run it empty, change the fuel filter add some diesel magic then fill with v-power...and bobs your father brother!

Shell V-Power Diesel - THAILAND

It is a higner refined diesel to take the crap out of it. It is cleaner burning not a synthetic diesel

You sir should read the information you have just posted, if you had actually had read it you would have read, "... Synthesised from natural gas - with outstanding ignition quality and exceptional purity for cleaner, efficient combustion..."

Synthetic: relating to or involving synthesis.

What do you not understand?

So I say again, V Power is a SYNTHETIC fuel. I KNOW what is in it.

It still is made from a fossil fuel from the ground, modified into diesel just like crud oil.

I never said anything to the contrary, I said

I think this stems from your lack of understanding regarding synthesis and synthetic. As I previously said this fuel is synthetic, that is a fuel that has been synthesised, much the same way you get synthetic motor oils, it is NOT a DIRECT distillate of crude and in this case it has been made primarily using the GTL process. If you had read and understood the information on the link you so kindly posted which actually confirmed my original statement you would have known that.

At any point did I suggest it was made from moonbeams and cabbage gas?
