Just had my Vogue back from MOT with a fail on three points:

1. Anti lock braking indicates a fault - The ABS light stays on for about 5 secs then goes out when you pull away.

2. Parking brake lever has no reserve travel - Needs tightening???

3. Exhaust emissions Lamda reading after second fast idle outside specific limits - Is that replace the sensor, or does it need tuning?

Any suggestions???

First one is not a fail, that is normal. Bollock tester he knows not what he is doing.

Second adjust hand brake. Back off cable, adjust shoes, then adjust cable so brake is on in three clicks.

Third not a bloody clue. A little tune up may sort that. Aircleaner, plugs clean Etc.

:DHi I agree with the other lads ideas on 1 & 2, as for three if youre co limit and hc limit are corect then your exhaust is sucking air in this happened to me on the last MOT my centre box was like Swiss cheese on top where you could not see so sucking air in and throwing out the lambda reading, I cut out the box and replaced it with straight pipe as at the time I needed the rangie on the road as quick as posible took it back and it passed with flying colours Later on I did buy a new box but havernt got round to putting it on yet (truth is I like the sound better).

:)Hope this helps:)

i hope your mot man uses a decelerometer and NOT put the car on rollers to test the brakes:eek:,put some injector cleaner in the tank with less than a quater full change the air filter then thrash it down the duel carrageway and back before taking it for another mot this somrtimes works for emissions tests,if the lambda is fooked then it will need changing

The lambda reading on the emissions test has nothing to do with the lambda censors in the exhaust system if the censors were wrong then it would through out the HC & CO readings if the engine is running correct within its limits and both HC and CO reading are in-line then the only explanation is air being sucked in somewhere along the exhaust before it reaches the emissions censor poked in the back end

For anyone remotely interested, I've now got my P38 through her MOT, it brought together two other threads that I'd started previously.

I took her to the independent LR specialist that was recommended when I asked for a recommend near Wootton Bassett:

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/looking-garage-swindon-area-p38-service-136484.html

Simon had a good look at her, out of the three fails -

ABS light - Bollocks, refer previous tester to Manual

Handbrake - Bollocks again, plenty of reserve

Emissions - Hooked her up on Testbook, found that the airflow meter wasn't working properly, disconnected the airflow meter, she ran sweetly, new one fitted.

Straight to re-test, she flew through, not even a recommend.

Also sorted my problem about her not running smoothly at around 70-80

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/p38-vogue-4-6-uneasy-70mph-132045.html

Result.... total bill: £223.32 inc VAT

Text Book Diagnostic £40
Airflow Meter Replacement £86.52
MOT retest £35
Service charge £4.17
Labour (1/2 hour) £26.52

I think thats a result...plus I've now got the Range Rover I bought back, that has the full power of that awesome V8, instead of the sluggish beast I've been driving off and on for the last 8 months.

Cheers for your help and advice gents, wouldn't have got here without you.

Moral of the storty...DONT get your car MOT'd at Halfords, I should really have known better lol

Wish you had said that in the first place, all would have been explained.
I would not take a pushbike to Halfrauds to get the tyres blown up.

Lesson learned..lol

As they say.."Less haste....more speed!"

But glad it sorted my running rough at 70...

Christ halfords? No, no no no no.
Any way lesson learnt. But by my maths your bill comes up £31.11 too much....

I bought my P38 in Sept 09, it started backfiring in Nov so i ended up buying a cheap 3 series BMW, the power seering went..I bought a 54 plate Diesel Clio.

The Range sat sadly until i re-taxed etc for its MOT last year, it failed on a brake pipe and Co reads, flushed injectors it passed, yippee. Backfired and ran rough all the way home so sold the BMW and swopped the private plate onto the Clio.

After quite some time, i've decided to get the P38 out and get it ready for the MOT....... New MAF, New iofancy spark plugs, new HT Leads (Rough running fixed in a T).

Had to take a lass to the hospital today from work, the damn air suspension wouldnt raise to proper height on one side (i thought there was a snake under it yesterday when i got home in the rain - Since when did anyone in West Yorkshire see a bloody snake when it was tipping it down....). Must have been the rear bag leaking - it almost looks like its having a cr4p when the arse sits down, which it does every time i park it back up..

Took a good five mins to raise again - I've booked it on for MOT on Monday but, How much should it cost to get the rear bags changed in Labour (approx will do), i'm not taking it to the Landy garage as last time they left it stood out in the snow for 2 WEEKS and didnt even look at it - Or even bother to ring me and tell me they couldnt look at it as they weren't LPG certified!!!!! Then the cheeky bleeders had the cheek to try and charge me £125 for not having a look.... DURRRRR! I wasn't born yesterday so they were well and truly put in their place, apologised and helped my with a bettery boost. PMSL.

Can anyone tell if i'm off my rocker, have lost my marbles, or should be certified? I still love my P38 even though i've only actually done about 300 miles in it in 2 years.....

Figured if its going in for an MOT they might as well change the rear bags. Can you change just one?

MACWY, as enery8 says doing airbags singly is not a good idea, and if they`re failing due to old age the front`uns won`t be far behind. As they leak they`ll soon shag out the air-pump too.
If you use a non Landy garage make sure they know what they`re about or they could put the EAS into fault mode.
P38s are cheap to buy now , but never have been or will be cheap `n` easy to run. No need to pay main dealer prices, but they do need some effort to keep `em going. You`ll need to put some time, cash and work into your P38, unless you`re happy having it as just a piece of sculpture.
