MOT Fail on steering box advice needed.

Failed the MOT on steering box leak, £300 exchange yet a seal kit is available, local specialist who did the MOT reckons they never work and leak after a month or so ?
Has anyone changed seals and did it work and what sort of job was it ?
He also issued an advisory on the fuel connector valve situated at the rear of the engine /offside weeping, has anyone sorted this problem he reckons it is quite common

now then ,i did change the seals in the steering box not for the faint hearted, it only lasted a few weeks before it leaked . a lot of work for no result so for me its a no go try paddock for an exchange unit, good spannering

I decided against the seals after looking it up in the rave cd... I bought a recon unit from craddocks for about 90 odd + vat with another 150 plus vat which I got back when they got the old unit back.. got a garage to fit it for me which they charged me about 130 for.. against the 30 odd quid for seals it sounds like a lot so it's your call but start with the RAVE and see what sort of job you think it is...

When my 300 Tdi developed a leak from the steering box the parts man in the local main dlr advised against a seal kit - he said they never last long .
Fitted a recon unit from Paddocks .
IF the Td5 box has a drop link like the 300 Tdi I would also advise getting the box with drop link attached - they can VERY difficult to remove .

Had exactly this done on me 300tdi couple ov munfs ago (seal kit fitted) and so far so good, no leaks or owt. As said above, removing drop linkage is a real fooker, so i bought seal kit, drove to a mechanic i know who builds landies in his sleep, an he charged me 70 quid to fit it. He did say though that they could last a few munfs or a few years, pends ow lucky yer are!

Depends upon how long it has been leaking. If the shaft has become scored then the replacement seals do not last very long at all. A replacement box is probably the best route.

now the experts are in the fred.. I had mine done as I mentioned above.. now the steering feels heavier to me.. any thoughts..

as a cautionary note I ummed and aad for a few days as while it was off the road I was driving a little toyota with too efficient power steering so no feel to it.. so I wondered if it was perception.. but I used to compare it as being lighter to steer than the mondeo and now it is heavier..

You can tell by the state of the shaft if the replacement seal will last.TD5 DII's drop arms are on so tight I usually cut them off rather than wreck a hydraulic puller getting them off.
I give the customer the option of a drop arm, (£30) and seal kit.Or a box,either is a PIA.

My steering box decided to leak while I was visiting the UK last year. I took it to Greenwich power steering services as I had used them in the past. They rebuilt the unit and the damn thing started leaking nearly a year later. I was not taking the car back to the UK for a small leak and decided on a seal kit. Interesting point is my box was leaking from the top around the plate thats held on by 4 bolts. I took this off and fitted the single seal from the packet (Paddocks £15.00) and all is well so far (three months).
Check to see where yours is leaking from, I do not want to build up your hopes though as this is a somewhat weak point on most Land Rovers.

Forgiven - you obviously understand the situation.(The planning application to brick it off and use it as a septic tank for Bradford on Avon.) PIA is short for particularly infuriating activity.

admitedly Bradford's prettier and has a better swimming pool...
