would i be right in saying that a tax free series 3 shouldn't fail an mot for having no windscreen washers?

and shouldn't it be exempt from a metered emissions test (diesel) as it was built before 1975?

any help greatly appreciated on both points

Not entirely sure, I not a series man, but if they aint fitted on date of manufacture then they should MOT it to them specs, not to the more modern vehicle.
I doubt my post helps.
though the older vehicle exhaust test was a visual only:rolleyes:

In the 60s all new vehicals had to have screen washers fitted, and all older ones have them retro fitted as well,a good few bob was made selling screen wash kits.

just got my series diesel through mot 1963 and he put it on the gas analiser, i was sure that it only required a visual check, but he insisted to analise it and fortunately it passed i still have my doubts

Read quite a good article last year or so about fitting blade-mounted washers to a landy - without the need to drill holes etc. Thought I ahad saved it, but buggered if I can find it now ....
Will keep looking...:)

if in doubt get him to check his testers manual

buster did one i think..... well it was either him or daft

thx for the replies & articles, i guess the guy that had it before me must have taken it in with the screen down, looks like i will fit/have fitted some jets as it is a good idea to have them i suppose.

i am sure people are right about the visual check only so i might argue that one :D, they must be getting tougher, i had a 110 a few years ago and that chucked black smoke out most of the time but passed its emissions and ran like a dream.

MOT'd my 79 series 3 last Friday passed second time after some fettling with the rear lights, as for emissions test on diesel all he did was a visual test no gas analysis needed as she is too old. as far as I can remember there is no emissions test at all (Petrol or Diesel) for any vehicle built or used before 1975.

Have a look at these, print them and take it with you to the retest. If they still say it needs a smoke test on the machine you can appeal if you think it should have passed.

Don't know how old your vehicle is but it says this in the testers manual

"Older vehicles, particularly pre-1960, sometimes emit unavoidable smoke due to their design. Such smoke is not a reason for rejection"

Technically, because the windscreen is removable, you don't need to test wipers or washers, although they do unless they know what they are doing.

Pre 1975, doesn't need an emission test, other than a visual check.

If fitted, (generally by the owner) hazard flashers, rear fog lights and side repeaters all have to work, even though the vehice wasn't originally fitted with them.

My understanding is the same, i.e. if it's retro fitted it must be fit for purpose and in usable condition, this applies to all the above and I suppose seat belts in pre '65 land Rovers etc. Interestingly my old one failed an mot because the spare wheel had some gashes in, the tester advised me to remove the spare wheel and then it passed.

Complete and total tosh. If it's not in the Mot Tester Manual then they can't test it. Spare is not an mot testable item. You could have a racing slick for a spare and it wouldn't be a fail.

If the car never had the item fitted when new, then they're not testable if you've added them yourself.

I bow to your superior knoweldge in this area. It seems MOT testers have different very different opinions when it comes to some parts of the MOT although I am sure they shouldn't. In my case it was alot less hassle to reach in the back and unscrew the spare wheel then spend time arguing, but whatever floats your boat. As for retro fitting I would be shocked if seatbelts fitted to a 2a that where unsafe and possibly dangerous did not fail an mot.

nope some testers are just shady ****s that will try and screw you over because they think they can get a bit of extra money out of you

just had a search around and can see it's spot on abourt the spare tyres. But the few bits I've found about retro fitting belts suggests things like this:eek:nce you’ve fitted seatbelts they become subject to the relevant laws, they are MOT testable.
I'm not saying it's right after all you can put anything you like on the web true or not.
