Well after 8,500 miles and half way back through Spain the 110 and I had had enough so flew home from Madrid and arranged for the 110 to be transported back and I should see it again in a couple of weeks!!.

That's the one mate, the names were mostly forgettable or unpronounceable for me.

12 years of being there 2 or 3 times a year and I still can't remember, or even pronounce, some of the names:D Still enjoy every trip as much as the first though and can't wait to get back there ;)

I was wondering what happened to you Ken, you were not the only one to fly back, I dropped Matt off in Gibraltar last Sunday.

Mike I don't know how you can use the o-d word - I will only accept older!.
Seriously though Mike and James would I have done that willingly - a few miles from Salamanca pale white smoke out of the exhaust resulted in the engine cutting out immediately - luckily the road was deserted and I would dread to think what my reaction would have been say in heavy traffic passing a line of trucks or going over the bridge in Seville. A test showed two pistons gone - just wondered what might have caused it - James perhaps you could have a word with Matt to see what he thinks.

Blimey, two pistons blown. Pale smoke would possibly indicate an issue with the head gasket but to blow a couple of pistons also, I don't know, I'll ask Matt tomorrow.

In 1994 I blew a piston on a turbo diesel Mondeo, the car was new, caused by a thermostat closing, blew the head gasket and a piston.

Oh No, sorry to hear your trusty steed is unwell. I wander what caused that. Unusual for pistons to go. Hope you can get it sorted soon. A couple of pistons is not the sort of thing one would carry as spares. Will be interesting to hear the out come.

Well at least it blew up in Europe so it wont cost to get it back to the uk.

Nice pictures seems a little cold up in the mountains. Can't wait to see more.

Also I do not believe that was Ken, he does not eat or drink ever ;-)

I definitely observed him eating an Aero biscuit, about 5 days in to the trip, only once mind.

Up in the Atlas, it was not that cold despite still having icy snow on the ground, we camped one night there, and i think it was around 10c overnight and in the 20's during the day, if you were in the sun.

So, I've spent the day power washing and cleaning the chassis again, and maybe driving full pelt over fist sized pebbles for a mile was not that good for anything painted or coated in waxoil, as it looks shot blasted now LOL, well it did until I used 6 cans of Rustolium rubberised black goo on everything. No paint left on my rear diff cover, all from one stretch of beach. I have now quite a collection of stones that stowed away in my chassis for sale if anyone wants them? Pretty colours, reds, green and some of them sparkle.

Thats funny, I to had the back end of larry shot blasted, over that black rock you have in one of your pictures, I'm going to fit some very thick metal before going again next year.

We did not get to the beach or tata gorge which is on the map for next time.

One question did you go into any of the silly dune fields which to us were quite difficult to get across? Looking at the pictures it seems it was only you and Ken so I wondered how you got on when you got stuck.

You mean when we got stuck like this.

It was just the two 110's on this trip, went across a couple of dune fields and a long stretch of sand down by the border, pretty much without any drama of getting stuck, I found that having lots of power was advantageous and 20 psi in the tires.

We took my tow bar off my 110 out there, as it was clear by day two it was crunching in to rocks, only downside was it was acting as a fuel tank guard, and I have a few scrapes on the thin LR tank guard now. I'd most probably fit a thick fuel tank guard for next time.

The cooper Discoverer STT tires did 5400 miles without any drama and still look in good shape, the anal part of me is not that happy that the white lettering has turned a little yellow though!

Should clean up with some cif maybe?

Your trip looked epic, I'm pretty jealous.

We will still keep the roof tent, but trying to work out where to put stuff lower down after you said you wouldn't have the spare tyres on the roof again.

Just as a matter of interest, what sort of a tow bar did you have?
I had the one below in the pic. I don't recall having any problems with mine. Maybe I thought it must have been just one of those Defender noises.
Camping over night in the Atlas Mountains, It was a bit cool as we were over three thousand meters high. by MichaelWills.fr, on Flickr

Well I did eat a burger at the campsite in Tarifa but was unavailable for many hours afterwards!!.
Will try and get some pics up from my camera as soon as I have finished cutting the lawn - still half way to go.
Still waiting for the 110 to make its way home.

I had the same tow bar as yours, unbolts in three sections, now in a storage box somewhere. The causality was the rear steps which I decided to sling in the sand somewhere.
