Hey guys!

Im thinking about putting a montego engine in my 2a.

Id much rather a 200 tdi but they're mega bucks!!

200tdi would bolt straight on as i have a series 3 gearbox.

I have about £500 to play with.

Thinking the montego engine would be best after reading an article in LRO or LRM..?

Anyhoo, Which is the best option?

.... Bite the bullet and spend a bomb on a 200 tdi and LT77 Gearbox

Or go for the cheap, but more difficult option with the montego engine?

I know that the more i upgrade, the more need to change my diffs...
I was thinking some RR diffs would do the job?

It needs something doing as its painfullty slow up hills, and the motorway is a no no!

Thank You.

the perkins prima engine is a great diesel engine, if you get the turbo diesel and the conversion kit it will completely change your series, the diffs you have are well strong enough for the job, and the brakes are ample, its an easy conversion and cheap, if you klook around you can buy a complete montego turbo diesel car for £100, fit the engine, use the front seats and scrap therest, also, take out the central locking motors andindicator/wiper switches, they are the same as early discoveries ;)

Hmm...
I would need the bell housing from a sherpa and a conversion kit which ive just found online for £350!

Ive put 2 front seats in mine out of a HYUNDAI LANTRA

I highly recommend them to anyone.

Leather, Runners fit straight in. took middle seat out and fitted home made cubby box.

HYUNDAI LANTRA!!

Cost me £10 each from a scrap yard, in great condition!!, they look twice as good as the ones ive seen in land rover mags for £150 each!

All my land rover friends are on the lookout for lantras in scrap yards now!

Damm you reality!

I should just buy a 90 and play the number swapping game!

... or have an 88" coil sprung, 200tdi, disc braked series 2a with an LT77 gearbox...

What to do, what to do, what to do.....

Is ther a good place to go for conversion kits as I am posibly helping a mate put a 2.7 diesel nisian engine in his 2a?

Why the heck would you want to drive a montego when you can drive a landy?

isnt there a chap on here sellin a 200 tdi disco for parts? 350 for the lot?
useless chassis and TB?

350 is cheap for the lot.
Where is it?

The 2.25 diesel LAND ROVER engine is just a bit sluggish.
The 200 TDI engines are silly money.
I would never prefer to
drive a montego!

If i bought a complete disco i could use the axles, box and engine..?

An have disc brakes.

Anyone done a conversion like that?

I know the exhaust would have to be modified...

Montego engines are pretty good in a Series, get the adaptor from Dudley engineering or Interspin, bolts straight to your Series 3 box, the kits they do include everything including engine mounts and alternator brackets.
I get 35 mpg and way more performance in my Series one, its just like the red one in the mags but tatty and green and primer and bare metal !
I got offered a complete Montego estate the other day for £50.00 with about 80k on the clock so there are plenty about. A cheap disco will probably need lots of engine work, a new gearbox etc. My mate has made that mistake when he should have finished of his Series 2a, now he has a derelict Disco and an unfinished 2a £1500.00 lighter !

The reason the montego Prima turbo makes such a good transplant for a series is because the power curve is slightly better than the 2.25 petrol and closely follows it Putting very little extra strain on the running gear. I believe they make having an o/d worthwhile.on a series diesel.

Been there done that!!! Montego engines are good and cheap until they start going wrong! Put one in my series a couple of years ago, cost about £400 in total. great for a couple of months, went like stink. Then the fact it was a car engine started to show, wouldnt hold oil, smoked like chuff! Parts can cost a fortune, i was quoted £100 for piston rings and £80 for gaskets. Sod that!!! The thing cost me a fortune and for what, i couldnt even tow anything withought it getting hot! I think i put 3 engines in in the end!!
I've got a 200 out of a disco with an Allisport intercooler in my hybrid 90 i built, i can tow with it, trial it, even comp it, its faultless and it goes like a train too! Parts are on a par with 2 1/4 bits too!
A 200 in a series, there couldnt be a better choice, save up mate you wont regret it!!
Sorry for the waffle guys.

Ive got a mate that says he can get me a 200tdi fairly cheap.
But i havent heard anything an its been a couple of weeks.

I think both conversions are fairly good, it'll just be whether i find a montego or a 200 tdi first.

the perkins prima is a great engine, it is more than adequete for a series landy, as for saying you can tell its a car engine, ive never heard such a load of old bollocks, its actually a marine engine so thats put paid to your argument, as for towing they are designed for low powered torque so there is no problem there.its possible that you ended up with 3 duff engines that hadn´t been looked after then continued to abuse them. if thats the case then you are probably better off with a 200tdi as they are designed to be abused by mindless individuals that think the dipstick is the bloke in front of them driving sensibly ;)

Each to their own, the prima proved it wasnt up to the job i intended it for, was told it would but obviously not. its pysically not robust enough for the use i gave it, but then it wasnt designed for so how could i expect it to be. someone put one in a range rover once, Oh dear i could have walked quicker.
I dont abuse things if that is what you are implying, i put a lot of time and effort into my vehicles and if using an engine is abusing it then i might as well leave it on the drive.
as for torque, theyre one of the reviest diesels i have ever driven, and they were designed by Rover and Perkins for their vehicles and used for marine afterwards.
