they were designed by Rover and Perkins for their vehicles and used for marine afterwards.

really strange that, as they were actually designed as an evolution of the previous perkins marine engine, all rover done was put up the money for perkins to develop it. perkins have been involved in designing marine engines for over 50 years and the marine engines have then been modified to fit in cars, so if you are going to try to bull**** your way out, the least you can do is research the facts first ;)

well all you can do is say what you know, i'm not trying to bull**** my way out of anything mate i dont do that, i dont confess to know everything, i'm not sad enough to spent hours fnding out useless info on stuff i really dont care about. didnt even when i put the engine in. i have no time for patronising condescending know it alls!! Thats not aimed at you by the way!

being new to this and also needing advice on s2a with a flat 2 1/4 oiler. ive been concidering the perkins prima and the conversion to mate the engine and box seems a right cofuffle, im told a tdi land rover engine will mate with removal of just one stud...firstly is this right seems too easy, secondley will a tdi 200 or tdi 300 from a disco fit into the series or does it have to be from a duffender, is there a difference if so wots the pros and cons...regards cartman690...:)

Think you'd need a defender front end to house a 200tdi.
Perkins engine is decent, easy to come by but the conversion plates are expensive an its alot of messing.

A 200tdi will bolt straight onto a series 3 or a later series 2a gearbox (not an early series 2) ------ But then, your diffs and halfshafts wouldn't take the increased power.

Your gearbox may have problems if you give it a bit too much.

And lets face it,
Series drum brakes would never stop you!

Pros and cons.....
Ive been trying to decide for months.

Save your cash, buy a 90 (disc brakes, 5-speed box, 200tdi, coil sprung, better heater, clocks, WATERPROOF, Power steering....)

Pick one up for about £1500 ish if you're lucky (ebay!)

Then,
........ Play the number swapping game!

Its the only way. A series motor will always be a series.

You could spend thousands of pounds making it something its not (like the nutters in land rover magazines with too much money!)

Engine, gearbox, axles, chassis, coil suspension, 90 bulkhead... is it worth the bother?

Appreciate it for what its worth, then go buy a defender!

Those are my words of wisdom after spending months trying to find ways to upgrade my series.

Laters...
Carl.

i got a series 1 with a 2.5TD fully rebuilt, 10spline shafts front and back, overdrive onto a s3 box. goes like a rocket. all it needs is brakes.

200tdi will be ok with series drivetrain if your careful, its been proven a few times now.

it will fit if you mod the front panel to take an intercooler and defender rad. or else you couldnt just not use the intercooler and then you won't need to worry about your drivetrain.

prima is a good lump, never heard 1 go wrong, but its a costly kit. and it don't look to neat when it's in.

i have done it (fitted a prima i mean) and would never look back goes like stink as it has an intercooler so what if it looks ugly its cheap to run and virtually bomb proof as i hammer the ass out of mine

look will some one talk sense!
what is a nice cheap engine swap for the 2 1/4 diesel?
simple, using as much land rover stuff as possible.
and not... then spending hundreds on the bloody exhaust!
lots have done it, share your wisdom.

i've got a perkin 4203 in one of my S3's, its got 90% landy exhaust with a couple of cuts and rewelded bit to line it up to the engine. it runs through a S2 box and overdrive, standard rover axles with the large landy brake drums on the back. its ruff but starts everytime and doesnt use much diesel.

only negatives are that the oil sump apears to be outside of the engine its also lubricated with gravel and old nails, its stupidly loud and sounds like an old tractor!

can tow just about anything though! pulled a S3 lightweight home on a large van transporter the other week with it, the water temp never went over "N", even goin up some steep hills! stick it in second gear and it could pull a train load of trains up a hill, at 5mph and making 3000000Db of noise like but it wouldnt break a sweat! :D

if your going the disco 20 tdi way then be prepared to make a bodge exhaust as the turbo is very close to the chassis as it faces down but on the duffender it is upwards thats the difference and it cools pretty much ok with a series rad just stick the intercooler else where my mates done it goes ok but its not as quick as the prima haha

If someone would tell me an easy way to get piccies into a thread I will be grateful ....

It's because I'm thick ...

If yer piccies are already in yer computer, go to the GALLERY on here then go to MEMBERS GALLERIES or whatever section ye want, Then click UPLOAD PHOTO'S. A screen will come up and then all ye have tae do is click the BROWSE button on the right-hand side and find yer pics. Once ye find the one ye want, double click it and it'll show up on the first line. Repeat this on the rest of the BROWSE buttons.
