I have recently sold my discovery v8 which i modded for green lanning. I was'nt using it but I am now suffering withdrawal ,keep looking at the spot it was parked in the wife say's I have got a face like a smacked bum,and to get another one. What do you think the chances of getting a decent 4.6 p38 for a couple of grand? .I can use it to cart the dog's about (the Disco was lifted and they are big dogs but I think the p38 can kneel down) and if I get the chance I could still do a bit of LIGHT green lanning (no water)?.

Your wife is not very kind is she, and if you are that ugly why did she marry you?:D There are loads on the bay of E but make sure you do all the checks as you don't want to buy someone's headache. Good luck

Hi Tomcat I know what you are saying but my wife has very poor eyesight plus she is very much into fishing and I have worms so we make a really good couple. The problem I have is there are p38's for sale at £1000 and I have seen some for £6000 do you think one for sale for about £2000 is BOUND to be a pile of poo am I expecting too much ?.

It seems to be luck of the draw with P38's, I paid considerably less than £2k for my 4.6 thor and its been totally fine. I have replaced the radiator and exhaust as they were on their way out but mainly as preventative maintenance. Also rebuilt the compressor as the seals were totally goosed. I've also had to put a second hand radio in it but other than that she is sweet as a nut. A bit scruffy on the edges but passed her last MOT with no advisories so cant be that bad!

A friend of mine just bought a 2001 vogue for £1650, its needed a few quid to remedy some minor issues. Again needed a radio and a satnav unit missing (£400 for the pair). Its running defects have been limited to needing a new MAF and the thermostat was stuck so it ran cold plus some rocker cover gaskets.

Thanks for the advice folks ,but I can't shag a Disco so I'll keep the wife for now . I have been offered a Blue 1996 autobiography, but here's were I am going to need your help ,the guy was using it up until last year (its in the next road to me ) then he had a problem with the suspension and had tyre valve's fitted, the pump and hoses have been removed but he has kept all the bits,he then moved work and could not afford to run it so it's been standing for months the head lining has sagged and need,s replacing and at the moment the battery is as flat as a witch's tit . Its got six month's MOT no tax and I think it will need tyres. He wants
£500 do I try and charge the battery or put a new one on it on it and give it a run ,or walk away now , how easy is it to refit the air suspension and were is the best place to get a head lining ?.I do miss messing about with my old Discovery .

Stick a decent battery on it, as long as the air bags are still there, refitting a compressor and valve block is simple, but if it has been standing, budget to replace all the suspension air bags...can be done for around £200...island 4x4 is a good place for parts.

Tyres, budget £70-100 each corner for new cheapies....

Headlining is a faff to replace but can be done, check ebizzle or if you want a new one try Exeter Trim....not cheap, but not too bad...

Check to see if it is a genuine Autobiography, it should have a build plate under the bonnet on the slam panel....

Nothing on a P38 is difficult to spanner, it is just the electrical side of things....

There is a golden rule in Range Rover purchasing.... Never, ever buy a Range Rover with a fault unless you are prepared for and appreciate the potential, time, cost and frustration involved in repairing it.

DIY diagnostics are available for the P38 at reasonable cost now-a-days making them a more viable DIY vehicle, but they will keep you on their toes with regards electrical faults.

You can get hold of the EAS diagnostic cable and software from Datatek (Member on here) for around the £20 mark to sort that out.

P38's chassis' don't tend to be badly affected by rust, although the tailgates can be a rust trap, but no where near as bad as Classics and Discos..!!

A P38 is a comfortable drive and you wouldn't want to be without it...but stick around on Landyzone, most problems on the P38 have been well documented and help is always available, as well as constant **** taking and laughing!

Test it out, if the engine and gearbox are sound with no abnormalities, then £500 ain't bad...but be prepared to spend a bit on it to get it up to snuff....

My P38 is a bit rough round the edges, but I use that to haul stuff about as I don't want to ruin the interior on my L322..:D:D:D:D:D

I have been passed some details of a chap based in Somerset, who can replace headlining for £190 fitted for a P38 with no sunroof. Think he can also do the pillars at extra cost.

Thanks Saint for taking the time to post that brilliant reply. I don't mind working on the car in fact I enjoy it we have another car so I can fiddle about with the p38 as and when it suits me
and the **** taking does not bother me I've been a plumber since I was 15 I am used to it.
Thank's Tony I will have a look.
