I have a Freelander 1 2005 1.8 petrol and it started misfiring so I did all the usual stuff, changed the plugs, coils and HT leads cleaned the injectors and it's still misfiring. So I got an ELM 327 code reader and it says it can't connect to the ECU. Just wondering if I should get a new ECU a refurb of the one in the car which looks brand new will cost a couple of hundred quid. does anyone have any other suggestions? All comments are appreciated.

What makes you think you need a new ECU? I'm not sure if your code reader is suitable for your freelander. When you say misfiring, is one of the cylinders missing now and again or all the time.

It's very unlikely to be the ECU. It's far more likely to be a broken wire, or failing injector.

Without a diagnostic, you're ****ing in the wind. So priority is to get a working diagnostic tool first.

Hi thanks for the comment it's misfiring all the time especially on no2 cyl now at the point it won't run.

I removed all the injectors and cleaned them they fire off every time on test. The code reader worked the first time I plugged it in but now says it can't connect to the ECU.

I know you said you had replaced the plugs and HT leads but try swapping them around to see if the misfire moves to a different cylinder. Also check the power feed to the coils
