Hey guys i was looking to put some P38 18" Mondial wheels on my defender like the ones in the link! I know i will need adapter spacers for them (If anyone does them) but was just wondering if there is a maximum size wheel you can put on a defender? Im not sure how far these will stick out but will prod need extended arches!

Also do bigger wheels need calabrating to the speedo?

Cheers

Wheel diameter won't affect the speedo calibration if you use appropriate sized tyres. It's the rolling diameter of the tyre that will alter the speed read out, a bigger wheel will need a lower profile tyre on it. Just find a tyre size calculator online and work out what size tyres you will need to keep the rolling radius the same as you currently have.

funny you say that! because i have sprayed my windows black and have some beavers on order! Was thinking about 21" alloys also!

My defender is for road only! i see these denders from khan etc which have huge alloys on! Let the abuse begin!!!

hey guys! can anyone tell me what year discovery thses are from? Ive been told Discovery 3 2006 but have done a search and dont think they are! Also you can get 2 types of adaptors for these wheels as far as i can see; the terrafirma one says it spaces the wheel out 53 mm for a fast road look!! (what ever that means) the other adaptor (bulldog) doesnt say anything about a 53 mm spacing!

Depends on how far you want 'em to stick out. With the wider spacers I expect you'd have to get wider wheel arches in order to satisfy MOT inspectors and suchlike persons. With the narrower spacers you might get away with keeping things standard. Take a wheel off and offer one of the new ones up and see how far out from the hub it can be and still fit under the arch.

Cheers brown! defender is in bits at the moment! We dont have mot's over here so not sure if sticking out would be a problem although i like the idea of a wide stance; my 90 wont be going off road! I must start a rebuild thread to keep everything together!

If you are talking maximum size in terms of taste and style...... then alloys are bit too blinky and anything bigger than stock is a bit :wtf:

In which case the wider the better. Do the construction and use regulations apply on the Isle of Man? I believe you're not allowed to have tread projecting beyond the wheel arches, although you can have sidewall and rim visible.

As others have said on here before, if the wheels are very far out it puts more stress on the wheel bearings so you might notice a shortened bearing life. If it stays on the IoM I can't imagine it clocking up hundreds of thousands of miles though.

With regards to taste and style, each to ther own i say; would be a boring world if everyone drove the the same style and colour landy!

I'll have to find out the regs over here but i would put new arches on anyway, but i thing the regular adaptor will prob move the wheel out anyway! Yeah your right i do about 1000 miles per year in the landy!

cheers!

Pants... All the same regulations apply over here, you might get pulled if the wheels are sticking out silly far. But there seems to be a fair bit of space in the arches for wider wheels on defenders. I'm running 30mm spacers and freestyle alloys from a discovery 1 they are fine. Maybe worth checking what offset (ET) the new wheels have, and compare them to mine. But rim widths and tyre widths will also affect the position in the arches.
