Changed the oil in my Freelander 1.8 yesterday. It had become the colour of black coffee and smelt as bitter. wonder how long it takes to get like that. If oil wasn`t so expensive here in Norway I would be tempted to change the oil again after a week to flush out any undesirables. The day before I changed the filter on the VDO petrol pump, in there was a dark gray sludge. Rinsed out the filter mat too and found its original colour. This car is from 2003 so it could be that both have never been changed though it had a new engine in 2007 at 90000km, now done 260000km. I am still struggling with misfiring when hot and fan and temp gauge anomalies but will come back to that later. I cannot find the air temp sensor that is shown in the Haynes manual. It is not where Haynes shows in the pic. Could it be somewhere else or not on this model? Thanks again for the help and suggestions about misfiring that I have had so far.
 
Genuine Sensors (1.8l 4 Cyl K Series Petrol) For Land Rover Freelander 1996 - 2006 Classic | Jaguar Land Rover Classic Parts Hi, you really need a copy of the Rave (genuine) manual, LordHippo has a link on one of his posts to it, these normally show the location of items. Here's a link to the parts diagram for the part but it doesn't show location.
I can see from my Haynes manual on page 4A.2 & 3 it shows the location on the r/h side of the engine but in the write up on pg 4A.8 it says the sensor is on the left hand end of the manifold (eng.) ! Not sure what year your FL is but wasn't there differences between pre 2001 & after 2001 ?
If you can I would change the oils at half the recommended intervals but as you say Norway is expensive. Hopefully someone will enlighten you to exactly where to find the sensor, best of luck, sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Hello Andy, many thanks for the info about the Rave manual. I had seen it mentioned but didn`t think it was for just anybody to download which I will now do and see what it says about that sensor and other problems. My FL is a Sept 2003 1.8 5 door model. I don`t know what happened around 2001 but I read that LR came out with a facelift model in July 2003 but don`t know what mechanical changes there were. I agree about changing oil more often. When I used to to drive from Norway to UK in my Colt, I changed gearbox oil every year. Engines and gearboxes create fine metalic particals that act as an abrasive until they are caught by a filter or a magnetic plug so the cleaner the oil is the better. I still have my Colt which was bought new in 82.It has done 600000+km, same engine, gearbox and driveshafts.
