Series 3 Matching a half shaft to a stub axle query.

Hi folks this is a continuation of an earlier post from nearly two years ago which I never took any action on.
I am now trying to make sense of it again.

There is fitted on a 1983 swb series 3 a stub axle 599827 for an earlier model.
I need a matching outer half shaft which I believe is 608023.

Both these parts I see as July to Sept 1980.
Would I be correct in saying this?
And are the shafts 24 spline?

This was a project belonging to my eldest son who abandoned it. I am carrying on with another son.
When eldest son started the project he had a new galved chassis plus Heystee disc hubs for the front axle. He chose the older type stub axle which means I need a matching half shaft. He could have kept the original ones as they are in vgc meaning no need for a new half shaft.

I mentioned this so you can see why I have this problem.
I don't need this at 73 but it keeps me active.

For non V8 there are two main stub axle types, one with same sized bearings (later 1980 post rationalisation), one a larger inner bearing (earlier).

The later type has the same size bearings. You need the hub to match the bearing. Later stub axles are hard to find, which is maybe why your son switched to the earlier type.
I think the later type also have a seal on the inside, unlike the earlier type, and this might be the reason for the change in shaft, so the newer shaft has a sealing surface.
Thus the newer shaft SHOULD work in the older stub, it's just not sealing. The drive flange will have to be the 24 spline to match the shaft.

I think the diff is still 10 spline.

Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned the year 1983 because earlier parts have been fitted.

We have the stub axle 599827 fitted and Heystee hub and disc fitted with bearings, bolted up and rotates smoothly. but no drive shafts fitted. They are sitting in a rack waiting for new outer shafts.
I need a matching outer half shaft which I believe is 608023.
I got this from the landrover bible.

I think the newer shaft should work. It's dimensionality the same, except 24 spline outer and extra machining for a seal.
Unless it's a V8....

Hi fellows, I got a couple of outer stub shafts and prior to fitting I noticed that there is no oil seal in the stub axle 599827?
Is this correct ? it looks as if the shaft runs metal to metal with the axle? I cant see any bearings or oil seal in the book.

I should have made it clearer
So, when the shaft passes through the axle, it comes up hard against the inner flange of the stub axle. Just metal against metal and lubricant of course.

is the shaft fitted fully in to the chrome ball bearing

Both shafts connected by the uj have passed through the swivel pin housing/bearing and oil seal and are engaged in the diff.
When the stub axle is fitted the half shaft bears against the inside of the stub axle. Is this correct?

Both shafts connected by the uj have passed through the swivel pin housing/bearing and oil seal and are engaged in the diff.
The stub axle slips snugly over the half shaft and is centralised eventually by the hub drive member.
when the half shaft is pulled outwards it touches the inner face of the stub axle, there are no seals etc between them.
Nothing shown in the book.

Can you post a photo of the stub axle inside view?

I wonder if it's a stage 1 V8 stub, or a defender item? They have a bronze bearing on the inner.

Going back through my earlier posts I note that someone said that the later stubs were manufactored to accept an oil seal which the earlier ones didn't have. This is an older pic ignore the scoring at the centre.
