selector shaft detents are but there are 2 adjuster screws with sprung balls ,one either side of lower gear lever

Haven't we all Martin,
I've got a spare in the garage and wonder why they say they are nonserviceable. I could see they are adjustable but there must be other parts that wear out. Will strip the spare down when I have a moment to myself.

Finally got round to sorting the problem, thankfully without having to remove the 'box. A bit of digging around under the gaiter at the bottom of the gear lever showed that something didn't feel quite right.... one of the bias pins was at an odd angle and not sliding, jamming the lever over in the 1st, 2nd position. A sharp tap and it popped back into place, job done. Both rubber gaiters are in a fairly sad state (top of selector, and tunnel one), can't find anyone with them listed as available though, any ideas?

Sadly the need for the gaiters/seals became obsolete a couple of weeks ago when a dick came round a bend too fast in the wet and slid over onto my side of the road, slammed all the way down the side of the car, before his front wheel met my back wheel and ripped the rear radius arm out, taking the air bag and brakes out too. The car was a write off, as was his I suspect, but at least I was still able to move the rangie off the road, even with the rear axle hanging off and the suspension collapsed, while his was stuck in the middle of the road till to police dragged it away!

You can buy it back off the insurance company and fix it if you think it is rescueable.

I did think about it Grrrrrr as the mechanical damage didn't look too bad, but the drivers side was a real mess body wise from the front wheel arch back. Although the suspension would have been a pretty quick fix I hate bodywork so decided against it, and as it was my daily drive I needed a speedy solution. So, thanks to a surprisingly good settlement from the insurance I'm now the owner of a very tidy Disco 2, as I couldn't find a half decent manual diesel Rangie in time.
