Main Gear Box oil/fluid ?

Hi all can anyone confirm for me that its auto trans fluid that i use to top up my main gear box on a 1996 300tdi manual just thought it was alittle strange for a manual to use auto fluid. Can someone comfirm this for me before i brake anything

Yes or change it for MTF.

if its red thats in it either dexron 2 or 3 atf oil or mtf94 if not ,either will do lr originally used atf then moved to mtf ,both are best changed yearly on average 8 -10 k mileage

I use DexronIII in mine, I change mine every 6 months, well I say I change it, it leaks out and is refilled over about 6 months...

Is MTF better than ATF or are they about the same ?

I believe it depends on the box - I found that with one it was quite lumpy n hard to select the gear until it'd warmed up so drained it out n tried the other which made the box feel a lot better... although i can't bloody remember which way round it was now! I'm fairly certain I found the MTF94 better - thats on a 300tdi R380 box
