hi there folks, could anyone help me please, as a prev post i am going to buy a rangy woooo hooooo anyhows was wondering what mpg you would get in the both?? im thinking about 19 or so for the hse and 25 for the dhse???
i can get low mileres hse no worries dhse is another matter
thanks for looking all
regards s jennings

19 would be good for the HSE, figure 12-18 more normal, from my DSE I could get 30 if I was careful, 27 was more normal - tho I did get 36 once following a lorry at 56mph, but that was a one off!

I have a 98 dse thats done 80k.
when i bought it i was getting 25 to 27 to the gallon.
STEP 1
I flushed the old oil out and replaced with fully synthetic. I also added slick 50 to the mix.
STEP2
I bought a K AND N air filter of there web site ( 35 pounds i think).
STEP 3
I bought a plug and play preformance box of EBAY ( 150 POUNDS).

I recently had fitted a stainless performance exhaust and on a recent run from sheffield to scotland ( 350MILES) I returned 41 to the gallon.
In and around hilly sheffield and travellind up the m1 to work I average 31 to the gallon.

hope this helps.:)

yikes more diff than i thought, oh well tis the dhse for me then, all the lpg converted ones i have seen are high milers
i have to say though scanning the forums there does seem to be a higher rate of problems than i would have thought
ok food for thought ta ta

Don't forget people come in here when there is a problem with their vehicle to find a solution. You are not going to get many people posting saying that their vehicle is running fine!

yes sorry you are quite right,as luck would have it i am just on the phone to a buddy,a fully trained up spanner merchant no less.
upshot of it was go for the dhse as far as he was concerned the engine is top notch, the ride is grand etc etc etc
my youngest son thinks i am going to be a snob!!!!

Try and get your buddy to go with you when you decide to buy one.

As mmaddock stated people come on this forum to fix faults.

With the P38 there can be lots of faults because they have so much technology in them and clever little devises do go wrong eventually. ( unless its a honda).
Common faults on p38 diesel to watch out for are.

AIR SUSPENTION.( MAKE SURE IT GOES ALL THE WAY UP, AND ALLTHE WAY DOWN. THIS RIDE HEIGHT SHOULD ALTER WHEN DRIVING AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS( HOWEVER THE TOP OFFROAD POSITION CAN ONLY BE SELECTED MANUALLY).

AIR CON AND TEMP PANEL. ( IF SHOWING A LITTLE OPEN BOOK IN BOTTOM CORNER THEN THERE COULD BE AN EXPENSIVE FAULT USUALLY BLEND MOTORS AND FRANCHISED LANDY DEALERS WILL TRY AND CHARGE A GRAND TO REPLACE THEM).

HOT START ISSUE. TAKE CAR FOR A GOOD RUN AND THEN TRY AND RESTART IT WHILE ENGINE IS HOT. iF ENGINE TAKES WHAT SEEMS TO A LONGER TIME THAN NORMAL TURNING OVER BEFORE IT FIRES UP THEN YOU COULD BE LOOKING AT A LOAD OF HASSLE .

HOPE THIS HELPS.
RANGE ROVER P38S ARE AN AWESOME VEHICLE, AND AS THE LANDROVER BIBLE BOOK SAYS.

THE BEST 4X4 BAR NONE.
THEY WILL CRUISE UP THE THE MOTORWAY EFORTLESSLY AND THEY WILL PLUG THROUGH THE RAINFOREST EFORTLESSLY.:)

From the 5/5/2001 until 15/7/2006 I conducted a fuel consumption study on my Range Rover P38 diesel purchased new in 1999 using data from the onboard computer. At every fill-up I recorded the following data.

Date
Price of fuel per litre
Litres to fill the tank
Milometer reading
Miles since list fill
MPG
Average speed

The results are as follows:

The starting mileage for the study: 40,919.3
The end mileage for the study: 99,165.7

Total mileage during study: 58,246.4

Average fuel consumption: 21.9 MPG
Average speed: 27.9 MPH

Highest MPG recorded: 30.8 MPG
Lowest MPG recorded: 18.6 MPG

Highest average speed recorded: 83 MPH
Lowest average speed recorded: 19 MPH

The above includes three European trips to and from Greece with a six month stay on every trip.

Please remember the data used to conduct this study were obtained using the car's onboard onboard computer so I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the data.

This was not meant to be a scientific study, I was just interested in the overall fuel economy of the vehicle

HI THERE BUT THOSE FIGURES SOUND MORE LIKE A GOOD PETROL ENGINE AND NOT A DIESEL, ( YOU ONLY AVERAGED 21.9 MPG OVER 58OOO MILES.).

I HAVE HAD MY P38 DSE FOR 4 YEARS AND IN THAT TIME I HAVE TOWED AN IFOR 510 HORSE TRAILER WITH TWO HORSES IN IT NEARLY EVERY WEEK( WHEN I TOW THE HORSES IT DOES NOT DROP BELOW 22 MPG).
I THINK YOU MUST HAVE HAD A PROBLEM TO GET POOR ECONOMY LIKE THAT.
I HAD A FRIEND THAT OWNED A P38 DSE AUTO AND HE HAD POOR ECONOMY TOO.( THE FAULT WAS FOUND TO BE THAT THE DIAPHRAM THAT STOPS ENGINE OIL ENTEREING THE FUEL SYSTEM VIA THE FUEL PUMP WAS SPLIT AND HE WAS CIRCULATING ENGINE OIL INTO THE FUEL SYSTEM.) HE HAD A RECON BOSCH PUMP FITTED AND GOT HIS MPG UPTO 27 MPG FROM 23MPG.

JUST A THOUGHT AND WOW WHAT A SURVEY.( JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING)

wow was informatve and precise, thanks for that
basiclly i have said to the man who looks after the farms td5 hi cap and the wifs disco, how much we can spend and what we want ie dhse etc
he seems to think for what we can spend should get a prety good dhse.
of cource i am looking on ebay autotrader etc to give me a indication of things for sale. is a very nice 39000 mile 4.6 hse on there looking for 15 k but it is lpg as well. mind you the sound of a v8 does sound grand.

At no time during my ownership of the vehicle did I notice a drop in performance of feel that the car had any fault. Until I part exchanged it, it had always been serviced at main dealers or Landrover approved garages or did I experience what I would consider excessive oil consumption so I assumed that the fuel consumption was normal.

I am a semi-retired IT consultant/engineer

i must have the worst mpg for a diesel then as i was getting only 19mpg until my fiance started driving it, now it gets 22 mpg which by the sounds of everyone else is still bad.

Yep, that's awful! You should be able to get 30mpg without too much trouble.

Possibly injector no. 4, which has a sensor on it - if that dies it doesn't fuel properly and results in poor economy. Could be other things too of course!

Matt

the engine thats in it isnt the original as i bought it knackered and bought 1 in bits then built it up so everything is hunky dory but while fitting the engine my old boy broke the fuel lines for the fuel filter so a temp 1 was cable tied next to and is still in use, a problem maybe? also i`ve done 13000 miles since the rebuild and havnt replaced the oil! silly me just couldnt be bothered.

I've got a 1996 HSE, I work out it costs pretty much 50pence per mile. I do mainly in town driving averaging around the 8.5-9.6 MPG. (and thats carefull driving, never going above 2K rpm). The best i have ever got was 18MPG on a long mototway journey.

Does anyone know if its a viable option to switch the V8 for the diesel engine as I'm about to become extremely skint due to going to the shell garage every few days lol.

m8 if you go for a diesel get a tuning box or get it re-mapped cos they`re pitifull.

yea it would be a shame as the v8 is a beutiful motor, and a big ol tank it certainly shifts, but im wondering if its at all possible, is it just an engine swap or are you talking transmissions, electronics, mountings etc...

I've heard a chipped diesel runs quite nicely but its still gotta be slow as a truck lol

big job m8 not so straight forward not really worth doin, if your wantin a diesel go for 1 that came out the factory as a diesel otherwise you`ll just get problems. everythin is different ecus the lot and yes the diesels are very underpowered, truck ha you`ll be lucky if you can catch a truck!

If you want really good acceleration and to be able to power along then surely you can't really expect good mpg. It's horses for courses! My 2.5DT has done 105k, might be a few seconds slower to 60 than a 4.6 (but still gets there) but regularly returns 25 mpg around town and 35+ on a run. I must admit I much prefer the roar of a V8 but as I do 10,000 + miles a year it is purely cost.

Ive a Y plate DHSE with a Jeremy Fearn re-map and ive just driven from Cornwall to Macclesfield in it....I spent most of the journey around the 70mph mark and the computer is showing an average of 43.9mpg (I think that that figure is slightly optimistic but reckon its easily doing 35mpg with a heavy right foot!)
