Hi All, I would appreciate Your views on which is the best most trouble free Freelander produced up to the introduction of the FL2.
I had to sell my FL2 LE sport Auto with SD engine in it through job loss and no longer been able to afford it.My FL2 was 2011 with low miles and full Land rover dealer service history and to retain its value I kept it concourse but was always disappointed on fuel usage around 32 mpg. I know it was a sport Auto but there was very little job wise You could do Yourself and the Dealer upkeep cost with service plans etc was sky high to the point where I couldn't even afford to put 4 tyres on it at 19" and £100+ each.
I love land rover Freelanders and decided to get a FL1 TD4 which seem cheap to buy and cheap to get parts for to maintain myself, I trained as a mechanic in my Youth and can do all jobs including some diagnostics and have a old snap on Ethos scanner that although outdated still reads EOBD and codes with the relevant keys.
I more or less convinced myself to stay clear of the Auto box TD4s for fuel reasons and then it happened I have seen a 2006 TD4 Auto with just 119000 miles on the clock full history everything looked after and am wondering if I have found my perfect vehicle at £2,500.
In the Early production of the FL1 I remember them been riddled with faults and the IRD/VCU unit problem seemed to stay with the production range at higher mileage but I wondered if JLR learned about and corrected the known faults as the years went by I'm thinking are there now only a couple of inherent faults left on the later FL1s.All Your views would be appreciated I am thoroughly enjoying reading everything on this site WELL DONE its a great reference, thanks in advance, Alan.
 
I only buy auto box FL1s, as I don't like doing clutch changes, and think the vehicle drives better as an auto, even though it's more costly to run than the manual version.

Get the highest spec you can afford, as those hold valve the best.

Unfortunately the FL1 sufferers from seasonal pricing, so it's more expensive in autumn/ winter, than in spring/ summer.

Look for 4 identical tyres being fitted (same make, same type, newest on the rear), as odd tyres cause expensive 4X4 system damage. Also look for missing propshafts, which normally mean a poorly 4X4 system, even if the seller claims improved MPG. This claim is complete BS, and not to be believed.
