Just got it back from garage. They couldnt find a fault as the m and s lights didnt flash at all during the day. They did find a leaking brake pipe and charged me £108 to fix it. At least it will stop if i ever get it to run consistently. As blackadder said, the phrase rhymes with clucking bells. Not sure what to do next.

put your battery on charge overnight and then see what happens!

Well its been about 5 days since I charged the battery and so far no problems, thanks for the help and fingers crossed.

Cold and dark nights will suck the life out of a battery that is near the end of it's life, but it can be prolonged by weekly, overnight charging.

I too bought a disco2 TD5 a few months ago.
I got the M&S lights coming on and found that if I waggled the wiring harness on top of the auto gearbox then restarted , they went away.
What your truck is doing is it is going into "Limp Mode".
It is designed to only go into third gear to save your engine etc.
I have found I get a lot of help here in Australia from our forum at ALRO forum And of course from your forum there in UK.
As a new owner you will find lots of silly alarms lights and other nonsense happening to your Rover. Give a few hours on the net forums, asking people with huge amounts of owner knowledge. You will learn that these trucks are pretty good things and learn to love the Rover.
All the best Nick Viner.
