Hi, This is my first post, so please bare with me. I tow a Luunar Lexon with my freelander and after about two and a half hours it is very reluctant to change up into top and seems to stick at three thousand revs. The box works perfect from start and only plays up after two and a half hours of work. I think the transmission fluid is being boiled and so refuses to change up. I have purchased the Lucas transmission fix size 710ml as this is supposed to stop the fluid overheating, now my question. Do I have to run 710ml out of the gearbox and then add the fix or can I just put the fix in on top of the fluid. I have heard that if the auto box is overfilled then the seals blow. is this the td4 or the v6 ?

does it change into top from command shift ?

rather than use the lucas fluid, would be more inclined to go for a straight fluid change 1st and see what happens then.

as for adding the lucas fluid, would drain 710ml first, then add fluid, then check level, if need be top back up with transmission fluid

do a search first as jatco box needs to be at right temperature when changing / checking fluid.
 
it you are towing a trailer you should drop 1 gear. Not the same as if you were driving with out a trailer

and change the fluid if you suspect your fried the trans fluid

You might find that even after a fluid change the box still hangs on in the lower gears. This is because the gearbox ecu is adaptive and simply altering it's programme to allow the engine to develop full power for the job in hand.
If you tow a heavy load long distance often it's well worth changing the box fluid more often than the book specifies. I personally wouldn't put any fluids in the Jatco box except for the correct or equivalent fluid.

I was thinking the same. It's chosen a lower gear to cool itself coz it's hot.

Stick with correct fluids and not the "magic fix" impossible to know additives. A recon replacement auto is about £1530+vat if it goes wrong.

if your not achieving lock up it will get hot

Yes that's a good point. The need to tow for over 2 hours for it to become "faulty" or have strange characteristics is a long time. I would have thought the additional stress etc would have displayed problems earlier, if there were problems. Perhaps it want a tea break.
 
until lock up torque converter gives only part of the power of engine to the wheels the rest is lost through heat ,if you was to drive about in 1 for long enough not towing it would overheat too ,oil cooler only copes for std driving
 
Hot export markets had an air blast fan fitted. They had a vent in the passenger side lower bumper for the intake, and a fan somewhere behind this, blowing towards the auto's oil cooler.
 
Thanks for the reply's guys. My freelander is a 51 plate td4 auto. I bought her about 8 months ago, she was due a service so I went to independent land rover services at Preston and had a full service done. Had a problem with hot starting, a new camshaft sensor fixed that and while I L R S were fitting that they did a fluid change on the gearbox as it was on the original fluid. The battery went last Sunday so it had a new one put on. I don't mind the repairs as I accept wear and tear on a 12 year old car, but she drives perfect accept when she has been towing for two and a half hours. I have stopped and had a break for an hour and then she is perfect for another two and a half hours. When I read the write ups for the lucas fix it said it was ideal for towing cars and stopped the oil from overheating, etc etc. So I thought it would solve my problem. Now I don't know what to do as it seams none has used or tried it.

Many people recommend it for them. I will put it in mine soon.

There are lots of cars sold cheap with a transmission not shifting correctly. Mostly due to lack of maintenance. A change of fluid and where possible a filter change then lucas products added have cured many. Here Lucas products are added to fleets of Semi's(lorries) and they get 1/2-million miles without issue to there transmissions both manual and autos. Lucas spends big money on R&D for the products they sell.

Please don't. I was planning to buy it oft you cheap sometime in the future if mine breaks beyond reasonable repair cost. ;) :D

Why don't oil producers put it in their fluid as standard? At £13.50 per L approx for the LR stuff it's not as if they're short on cash to make a good product.

they sell more parts and cars that way. You go to dealer and trade it in, and first thing do is what I said. If it then checks out ok then they sell with a huge profit
