Hi guys am in the middle of the gearbox rebuild for the orange landy...
have started stripping the gear box down and felt 5th gear teeth wear pattern looks even, but the teeth are almost sharp to the output side and the gear that rests on 5th has some small "chips" very very small but I can see them!

Without calling ashcroft and buying a compete gearset can anyone tell me if this is acceptable?

I would say they sound like they have excessive wear and sound like they are ready to fail no gear is machined to a sharp point they generally have a small flat on top of outer diameter of the tooth 😳I would replace for sure

And to add to complications my 5th gear has no holes so I can't lock it in place like the guide shows..... Wonder what this is out of?

Right so need new gearset..... That's fine ashcroft is closed though! Bugger!

So the 5th gear appears to have a press in collar..... So i have a tr7 box maybe?

Thanks for the awsome quick responses

if you look at yours its a very early lt77 and your lay shaft 5th gear is secured by a circlip and collar so no need to lock gear to undo or tighten nut

Anyone? Edit last post didn't show until I posted!

Glad to hear that! Are there any other differences I should be aware of?

Atleast I know where I stand now with it!

According to ashcroft the early gearboxes were weak?

Is it worth me rebuilding this one now that It needs gears?

Only asking for an opinion as you seem to know your way around these gearboxes!

Thanks again for the help

Afraid I'm back! Gearbox apart, and most teeth seem sharp or bits missing, and there seems to be a minefield of options to rebuild it......

Can I use the gears from a discovery box?

Or can I upgrade the current setup with the later stuff? Piccies in a sec

Given the state of the selectors, reverse and I broke some teeth on the 5th gear on mainshaft (the rings at the back)

Am I better off sourcing a recon box? I want to rebuild this myself but don't have unlimited pockets!
