Just curious as to how long I should expect mine to last. Its done 166000 miles, its never been rebuilt. 2nd gear a tad stiff but double clutching sorts it and it goes in like butter. How common are worn input shaft splines and 5th gear bearings.

Thanks

Mine's on 180,000 and is suffering from difficult second ( especially during the colder months ) and a 1st that likes to jump out when engine-breaking downhill. Gearbox oil changed regularly, but I think it's nearly time for a re-con. That said, I could put up with the niggles indefinitely, as they're not that bad really.

without the cross drilled input gear often retrofitted about 60k was common rebuild mileage ,needle rollers gears run on last forever as long as well lubricated main box bearings less so but longer with regular oil changes

My car is on 252k and I believe the LT77 is original. It's certainly been in there for at least the 112k I've put on it - and it looked very old/dirty when I bought the vehicle. It was fitted with a cross-drilled gear many years before my purchase, as a result the output shaft splines are in good nick.

Gear change got really bad a little while ago and I thought it's time was up, but I discovered that the grub screw on the selector had worked loose. Tightened it up and applied Loctite and it's good as new.

It'll blow up next week now I've said that!

I hope mines got a cross drilled gear now! Interesting to see it can potentially do 252k... Anyone aware if input gears on the transfer get the same problem if no cross drilling was done?

Mines from a Sherpa van. It makes a strange noise in 1st like a bound spring winding. I asked at the LR garage what it could be, he said, "borrowed time". :p

Anyone know what jag models used them?

before cross drilled input gears, g/box main shaft spline wear was a serious problem and evident on any box to varying degrees, wear effects both shaft and gear if ones worn the other certainly is
