Hello all,

Do twin LPG tanks have to positioned in any particular way?

I have 2 that i wanted to mount on top of each other and not side by side as usual.

Any advise would be great

Thanks in advance

jolly

traybacked a 3.9v8, it used to have twin 36L tanks under the sills which is no good for off road. Was planning to mount them inside the cab on what is now a rear bulkhead behind the passenger seat (which can be moved forward to make room) one ontop of the other .

They was going to be mounted in rear tray but using the std tank now so they will live inside for a bit until i can afford / find time to build a custom tank

your guage will be useless, i would put the one with the guage on the bottom and use it to signify the 'reserve' or run two guages

on mine(and most i have encountered) the guage from only one tank is used for the display. thus if one is on top of the other it will be full for ages then drop rapidly or it will be empty for ages and still have half the total fuel. if its in the cab tho you can see how much fuel is there by the on tank guages. i believe they should always be level with eachother, dunno if it affects filling and off take. dont think it does on liquid take off systems but on vapour take off systems it would, kinda like turning a blowtorch upside down and the flame goes crazy!

yeah the guages are a bit hit and miss, you have to calibrate it carefully by running a full tank out and recording the positions on the software. its a bit more hassle than its worth to be honest as most systems loose thier oomph when the gas is low!

I reset the trip every time I fill up and then at 150mph I startt looking for somewhere to fill up.. sometimes it makes it to 200 sometimes not.. the guage worked a bit when I got it but useless (would go suddenly from full to empty without anywhere in the middle) now saya empty ALL the time.. investigated having a new one put in or whatever but was told it wasn't worth it as they are all rubbish and none of them ever last very long..

hi guys, sorry to butt in on this topic, but can you tell me what your average mpg is running on lpg. i have a 98 3.9 v8 disco running on lpg which when i first purchased her i am sure it was alot better than it is now, not good with math lol but for 20 quid at roughly 50 pence a litre i am doing around 60 - 70 miles thanks and sorry again to butt in . just had a new regulator fitted as before it was as low as 40 45 miles on same amount of fuel.

I have 2 * 36.. generally only get 50 litres in at a time.. if I'm willing to wait an aaaaaage I can get 60 litres in.. generally I don't bother.. after about 45 litres it fills so slowly it's hardly worth it.. next week though as an example I'm towing the caravan down to kernow (if I can get the damn disco started) and LPG is like hen's teeth down there so will stand with my hand on the button for as long as it takes...

mine is much worse consumption than I expected.. and I think lower than it was when I got it.. but it is a very old single point sytem from a firm that's no longer imported and trying to get it serviced is a nightmare.. I've pretty much given up and figure it's still a lot better than paying for petrol...

you can have a new regulator or vaporisor whatever they are called lol for around the £130 mark fitted which then can be serviced for around 30 quid for diaphram set etc if it
ever blows or rips. worth thinking about if consumption is that bad save you in the long run.

assuming the gas is not going into the stratosphere, then all the consumption should be down to the setup. now, on mine, a leonardo controller is set up by software, this regulate the amount of fuel that is introduced. as i use it mainly for plodding there is no need for it to consume vast amounts of fuel. it is set up fairly well as i have had a good play around with it to get familiar and i wanted to cut out the backfiring on over run.

the lpg forums is a goldmine of info if you wanna check it out. a fella called rossko is a bit of a guru on there and i think he's a landy enthusiast too!

lpg is just like setting up the carbs on a normal engine, fuel and mixture. there is also the software side but its really not that complex!! i would suggest you get hold of the lead for it and the software its only about 15 quid and can save that in fuel.

i got from rotherham to ashford in kent and around ashford for a bit, dunno how many miles, then to around gravesend on the a2 to a filling station on approx 95 litre fill up that works out around 15mpg which doesnt sound too good but given that some of the drivng was town, some of the motorway was traffic, the rest of the motor way was at speed (70+) and not at the 56mph that LR state as the optimum fuel economy speed all for around 45 quid in a 2.7 ton car with a 4.0engine. i thort it was fecking amasing!!

it'd have cost me over 100 pound for that in petrol!!

rule of thumb is around 15% less mpg than petrol but at around 45% cheaper per litre youre 30% better off, not the 50% that most people state on fleebay!!!

incidently the car indicated 21mpg on the way home but i had to get off the motorway, if i'd continued to, lets say the north pole, then i would have een in proft i thnk!!!

so would the best place for the take off for the engine be at the top of the system or the bottom you think?

I imagine the connection for the filler would be at the top?

i'd say bottom as the liquid will flow beween tanks but it depends on the connections, i'm sure they are all together, cant remember how mine are rigged as ive spent the last few months in the engine bay with a knackered block in the boot!!!

best to check out the lpg forum and you will prolly find the answer there!

i can understand the valves for each tank being at the top. The tanks are connected with basic T pieces when they where side by side, now they are going to be on top of each other with each valve at the top where should the T pieces go.

Going by what has been said, The T piece that fills should be closer to the top tank. The gauge feed should be on the bottom tank and the filler should be closer to the top tank.

But i'll be checking the LPG forum and see whats best.

cheers for all the help

jolly

as said ive never seen a setup stacked so it may not be wise, theres obviousle some reason it isnt done?? either space in a normal car or some more functional reason!
