I've just picked up my lpg Rangey which has a 70l LPG tank. I've filled it up twice and each time it only took approx 40l from empty. There is an led gauge with 4 lights and all 4 light on fill up but this almost instantly drops to 3, ie. it is only filling about 3/4.
I know a 70l won't take 70l but was expecting it to take 50-60l.

The car was standing for a couple of months before I picked it up but I've given it a bit of a run and done 150 miles, which I was hoping would sort it, but it hasn't. So now I am thinking it might need a service or something else ... suggestions welcome.

Thx
Chris

Yes but I'm currently at 55% of capacity ....

10% less than capacity meant it would take 63l not the 40 its getting now.

don't quote me on this.....
A tank can be filled to 80% of it's capacity. due to expansion under different temperatures. there is a safety cut off somewhere in the tank to stop overfilling above 80%. (Where I live they remove these so you can brim it)
I would suggest this is at fault. when the tank is empty, pull the level meter from the tank and have a fiddle with it.

Cheers guys - is there an easy way to sort out the gauge myself or should I take it to a "proper" lpg servicing place?

hmmm im sure mine took 70 the other day in fact it must have 49.9p per ltr an it cost £34.99

i do however have a problem

took it to a lpg conversion place as i thought i could smell gas in the cab

the guy said its a common fault i have on the romano conversions, faulty pipe at the back of the engine, he actually showed me it, rubber pipe which had bent rather badly

anyone know much about this?

there is an over pressure shut off on the pump and on the tank valves, now these could be faulty, one tip i recieved is to fill the tank till the pump cuts out then remove the filler and reconnect and fill again, there was air in the system on mine and it caused the pump to fill slowly and cut out.

IMO it's probably best to get it looked at by someone who knows what theyre up to, not worth playing around with anything to do with pressurised containers. *shrug*

I had this exact same problem when I had my system fitted. Came down to the tank being mounted at the wrong angle making the fuel level sensor reading full at about half tank level. Worth checking - especially if you have air suspension like mine.

That sounds like a possibility, I'll be popping round my local garage for hi to give it a once over this weekend. I'll get him to check that before I go off to an lpg specialist ... I do have air suspension as well.

I have a P38 and it always takes different amounts of gas on a full fill, it depends on the temp, and how much pressure remains in the tank, some times early morning mine has said empty, within an hour of the sun being on the car it has shown 1 light, I would not worry about it, the wonders of expantion and contraction of gasses, as my old Dad used to say if it ain't broken don't try to fix it.

PS imight show as a Junior member but im 62 and had Range Rovers and Disco's for more years than my bank would like to remember !!

had the same problem on my old girl when i picked her up not been run for a while got the same 70 lt tanks most of them are right mine came good on its own after a few long runs and fill ups the tank is now getting between 56 to 60 lt depending on what sort of day it is eg warm, cold, and below zero. so my tip is run her for a while because some times they can be a bit tempremental when they been stood for a bit and never rely
on the gauge them lights are bloody useless
