Hi i have a chance to buy a 54k p38 1997 4.6hse looks amazing. And has full service history, only
Problem is I'm worried about the engine and gearbox troubles and have noticed loads have had new engines and or gbox overhauls , would this year and mileage mean this car may hve escaped the
Troubles or do ypu thing it's prime for needing work ?
Thanks for any replies

I wouldn't like to bet on it. best way to know is drive it hard, and do all the other checks mentioned in many threads on here.

:welcome2:As already said drive her, check that all is working as it should and then check it again, if possible take someone with you who has had one for sometime.
They can be high maintenance but they are wonderful to own and drive, at the end off the day they are like any old vehicle they need love and attention and thing's do ware out and need replacing from time to time.

Good luck and post some pic's if and when you buy it.

dont pay over the odds for it either just because it has only got 54k on the clock DO YOUR HOME WORK there are loads available

Well I can get it for 2500, thing looks mint it's black and spotless chap says was imported from japan in 2000, it's a 4.6 hse he says runs amazing no problems at all , thing is for that price sounds like a good deal, when you look at the high mileage ones out there, anyone got any views on imports and 4.6 hse p38, should I take the risk ? My plan would be to LPG it,

Just out of curiosity how many miles per tank do you get from a4.6 ?
hahahahahahahahahahaha you do better asking how many lamppost to the gallon, look dont take this the wrong way but if you got to ask how good on fuel a p38 is dont get one. round town 11 to 14, on a run not to fast 18 20 to a gallon. £120 to fill up to top.. :pop2::pop2::D

Sounds about right. And if you do LPG it take about 10% off that, but at 73p a litre it still works out ok. Generally an average 220-240 mile to a 90 litre tank (75 litre usable) at about £50 to fill.

well sounds like ill be lpg ing asap, so many scare stories on here reg lpg and engine failure, ;-(

no disrespect to you Morrow but i just don't understand people who want to buy a luxury car, top-of-the-range in its time, and then they want to lpg it, coil-spring it, stick cheap chinese tyres on, drive it on supermarket petrol etc etc. these cars were not cheap to buy new and they were not designed to be cheap to run. reasonable yes, reasonable in light of what they are. but not cheap. if someone's taken care of this one for all these years, kept it in original spec and not abused it, and you can't really afford to run it then do the right thing, step back and give it a chance to be bought by someone who'll appreciate and enjoy it. (what was the phone number of the seller then? cough cough. :p )

Having lpg installed on top of 2.5k purchase doesn't really sound such a bargain. I think you'll find several on ebay under 3k with lpg already.

Rasheed, not sure your position is sound. If you follow it through, don't we all end up walking because we can't afford to buy and maintain our ideal cars?
Isn't a range rover on chinese tyres a nicer drive than a yaris on french tyres?

So you don't mind giving the government more cash ! See if the cost of fuel wasnt lining the governments pockets then fair enuf, but I pay enough taxes as it is, if I want to LPG my car fine I will do and I'll save cash by doing it, range rovers are to be used , I hate people like you with your big ego, thinking your brilliant because you spend loads on Tyres and pay whatever price at the pumps , whose the silly one , I will use my rangerover and will look after it !

Go for it mate. I bought mine a year ago at 65k and lpg'd it. In hindsight the fact mine had an invoice for headgaskets I should have walked away as I'm now of the opinion that headgaskets rarely fail and it's always another underlying fault. Which manifested itself as slipped liners but that's design fault and nothing to do with owner care (IMO) A low mileage well looked after P38 is a much better option than one with higher. This was apparent at Mot time when it sailed thro with no advisories and no rust. Mine came from Hong Kong after being personally exported there from new by the same owner that brought it back 9 years later.
