loud alarming clunking noise when under load

hi guys bit of an emergency here - just had to pull over -loud clunking and jamming sort of noise especially on lock both in forwards and reverse. bit frightened to drive it as it is like a huge shock going through the car- what could this be do you think? had a search for propshaft and driveshaft but not sure what to look for really -2001 TD 4 freelander

youd need to jack both fronts or rears up to feel for issues with diffs or cvs etc ,two wheels on one side to feel bevel gears in ird

do you think that removing the propshaft might help this problem? in the short term at least!

depends on whats actually wrong ,but worth trying

no quite simple 6 bolts prop to ird undo first ,4 bolts on rear flange plus 4 on carrier bearings

ok so problem is worse when turning - and also looks like the rubber joint (vcu?) looks like it is not sitting centrally as if it's been knocked off where it should be but not sure if that is right or not. Also happens when freewheeling. Any of this point to one thing more than another?

hi on the front coupling, is it the torx bolts at the back of the coupling or the hex bolts at the front of the coupling?

Er, they're torx one end with hex nuts on the other end I think. The 6 bolts go through the coupling with three crescent shaped washers on the hex end side.

Yep. Worth taking the prop off for a test tho.

If the IRD's failed it'll have to come off anyway

If you're happy taking the prop off you'll be fine replacing the IRD. OK, it's a long job, but doable for someone handy. An IRD and new VCU may set you back a grand, but it's cheaper than a new vehicle

after the money I have spent in the last 2 years I think it may be time to cut my losses!!! I need the car for work and it's a pain to have it keep falling off the road for this and that! Annoying as it's just been MOT'd "small bill" at £300!!! Anyone wanna buy a TD4?
List so far done that I recall:

fuel tank cage
both fuel pumps
abs sensors x3
2 drive shafts
sub frame welding
window motors x3
track rods x2

there's more but I would have to look them up!
