Lots and lots of white smoke

hi everybody,
Just joined the forum,
I was wondering if some one. Could shed some light on a little problem I'm having.
So I have a 2002 Range Rover vouge 3.0 td6,
And yesterday I was traveling around and I started to hear a slight whine/whistle then about 2-3 minutes later it turned into a massive whooshing sound Then to top it off it started billowing out white smoke lol.
hope some ones got some ideas
 
Sounds like it could be turbo related, if an intecooler hose hasn't come off your turbo has probably thrown a wobbler
and welcome to the mad house where you will get very good info and a bit of friendly banter:) well **** taking as well.
 
Turbo, sounds exactly what happened when I blew a Nissan Bluebird ZXR .. ;)

Only other time I've seen gobs of white smoke was in a mate's Defender which had swallowed a ditch full of water ...
 
White smoke doesn't sound turbo related, that's normally blue smoke when engine starts running on oil instead of diesel. Unless of course, there is water cooling to the turbo and the water is getting past and into the engine. Certainly sounds like it from the whooshing sound. Need to look all around the intake tract for anywhere that water could be getting where it shouldn't. If it's loosing water into the engine, then the coolant level will drop.
 
Earlier on I took all the engine covers off and had a nose about and I took the under tray off to see the pipes to the intercooler,
Couldn't see or feel any splits from the pipes,
Took the egr off and it had traces of oil in it?
I found the intake manifold had a bit of a leak could see traces of oil coming out
All my fluids are good and are not dropping

Another strange thing was when I was nursing it home yesterday when I got back I looked in the oil filler cap and lots of smoke came from it??
 
i think the head gasket has let go somewhere maybe, or the oil drain tube has blocked, sometimes a filter in the oil feed pipe to the turbo will give trouble, what oil have you used in its last service ?
 
Take the exhaust off the turbo see if its wet with oil .rear turbo seal on exhaust side may have failed .dumping oil into a hot manifold ,white smoke, Might be less when engine is cold.....
 
Hi guys
Been investigating over the last week and I have changed the breather at the top of the engine as it was all blocked up
And I noticed the inlet manifold has a split in it
I'm guessing the engine most of over pressurised and split the manifold!
Just looking for another manifold and hopefully that should sort my problems out
Anyone know the best place to source one ?

Do a compression test, sounds like broken rings or h/gasket/cracked head to me if you have smoke coming out of the filler cap.
 
Yeah think I'll get a compression test done over the weekend
And does any one know what size nut I need for the inlet manifold I have lost one and I can't find anything like it

I have just dropped the turbo and it's absolutely goosed! Been quoted about £300 to get it rebuilt does that sound like a fair price?
 
Glad you finally found it. When you replace it, make sure you fill the oil feed pipe with oil for the first startup, and don't rev it much at all for a while to allow the bearings to get plenty of oil round them.
 
Cheers for the advise hopefully I'll be able to get it back on by next weekend
As the turbo has chucked oil all round my intercooler and pipe work is it worth stripping it off and cleaning it all or will it just burn off over time ?
 
Absolutely well worth cleaning all the air system, especially back to the inlet.

There's a chance that 'something' may have been dragged through, a leaf/twig/5p piece that caused the turbo to fail catastrophically, so I'd definitely strip the whole intake to the turbo, including the air filter box, you're likely to find debris in the airbox base. After the turbo, the intercooler etc, is also a great idea to clean. The oil lines the sides of the tubing and can clump off .. odd hiccups and pops and farts if you're lucky, SHTF if not .. :)

Sounds about right. I can thoroughly recommend CR Turbo Engineering, if you want to get a second quote.

Thought I'd update on my progress
Got the turbo back from being rebuilt fitted it this morning, everything was going so we'll,
Got everything button upped fired the rangey up almost no smoke straight away thought every thing was solved after 10-15 mins at idle I went for a quick spin heard a Big Bang then lost all power And lots of smoke again!!! Really unsure what to do now
