When i go out to my 04 freelander, it won't start the first couple of times.

I'll jump in the vehicle, keys in ignition to turn the ignition on, dash lights appear.

I turn key to turn engine over, i get a click and nothing, lights on dash may dim.

This could happen two or three times, then next try it will start, no issues.

Its a brand new battery that i bought in early february.

Could it be a bad earth? Battery must be charging as, once driven its ok, unless left for 6-8hours, then symptoms will occur again, then start.

Thanks.

Alternator not charging the battery properly? Or your battery is knackered, if the car has been left for long periods of time.

A dead short could also drain the battery if you've some faulty wiring somewhere

Battery earth cable onto the engine or body is going high resistance under cranking load. After a couple of times trying to start the engine the cable is heating up causing the conductor to expand and make a good enough connection to start the engine.
This is common on lots of Rovers.

Ideal, I will check the cable/s!!

Thanks!!

ARGH.

Checked the cables on my car, all seem ok, but the problem has now got worse. I can't start the vehicle till after about 20 - 25 attempts of turning the key now.

Anyone with any further help?

Lloyd.

The ignition switch behind the key can go open circuit. Also the starter solenoid can stick. If you look at the starter motor you will see 2 wires. 1 will be a thick red wire bolted on and the other will be a small wire with a push connection. Making sure the box is not in gear. If you apply 12 volts to the small terminal on the starter it should spin the engine. If it does the starter is ok so the fault is elsewhere.

It might just be the thin wire on the back of the starter motor - sometimes the connector just needs a push into place.

I read an article about Freelander ignition switches causing grief in a Landy mag a while ago.

Also check the 'How To' FAQ section. I did a tutorial on rebuilding the starter solenoid. Could be worth investigating?
