Hi. looking for some advice please.driving to work today i have noticed that there seems to be a lot of play in the gear stick. I can select all the gears but you can move the gear stick from side to side very easily no matter what gear i am in is this a job for the garage or can anyone offer any advice on how i can fix it myself. Thanks. Its an 05 if that helps.

It maybe that the roll pin that attaches the lever to the shaft from the gear box is worn or loose(mine fell out)
Its a bit of a fiddle to get at.. but get underneath remove the under tray(or you could just take out the rear fixing bolts and wedge the tray down with a block of wood) and look upwards just forward of the crossmember you will see the joint,
I replaced the roll pin with a bolt and nylock nut , the only down side is you have to push the bolt up from underneath as there is not enough room above the gear shaft to turn the bolt 90 degrees hence the need for a nylock nut .
Hope this helps:)

The rollpin is only on 1.8's , dont know what you drive though.

If its a Td4 i'd check where the solid selector rods from the base of your selector lever bolt onto the bulkhead. The bracket there can come loose, gives a wierd selector feeling.

I'd also say that i think the gear levers on manuals does tend to wobble alot anyway.

I have the same issue. Good inch of free travel in every direction when in gear.

Also mine has started to not go from 5th to 3rd at times. I need to go into 4th then forward to get the gear.

Sounds a cheap if fiddly job.

Thanks for the help eveyone. Mine is the 1.8 The guy from the AA came out this morning and it was the pin. It had came loose so he managed to get it secured but recommends i get a new pin fitted it only took him about half an hour and i was back on the road. Once again thanks for helping me.

I have an 02 td4, with same problem, anyone have a pic of area where I should be looking, is it an easy/cheap fix?

Thanks

Hi, I'm new here but have the same problemwith my 1.8 petrol 2004 3dr freelander first gear is now selected when the lever is somewhere in the passenger foot well and I can't get it into reverse as the lever would have to be put somewhere between my legs and under the drivers seat! My problem is that being semi disabled I'm going to have to get a garage to fix it, can anyone recomend one in the sw london area that knows freelanders and won't rip me off, How long should it take to fix?

I've got roll pin and mines 2.0lseries, mine fell out a lot as it did the gears became more and more sloppy until I got a pudding mix feel, fitted the pin back secure with a tiewrap not had a problem since, there's also a rubber bush or2 could be that

I've got a 2006 td4 2.0 diesel go same issue very sloppy / loose gear lever slipped out of 3rd few times and seems woobly /rattly when changing gears if this is the gear lever what type do I have and how do I go about sorting, is it a pin or is there an easy fix please thanks

I fitted a bush kit to the gearstick leavers, and changed all the worn plastic and rubber parts on the shifter
search the internet for PG1 gear linkage bush kit, you'll find it.
sorry but unable to upload images right now
