Looking to put Spare wheel on bonnet

i wouldn't do it! the amount of times you have to lift a landy bonnet to find out what the strange noise is/ refill with oil/water/hit something with big hammer you will get thoroughly ****ed off with the spare being there;) mine is inside and i find it very handy to hang the towel over to dry, thats the towel i use to dry up all the puddles inside btw ;)

Thank you LandyBird for your input.

I have the wheel inside at the moment like yourself, but I was hoping to free up some space, as I often have Four big blokes in the back in full battle dress.

I am also considering putting it on the back using the independent frame as I hear that putting them on the back door is not to good for it.

Hi,

I just bought a Series III and would like to put the spare wheel on the bonnet (it is currently inside) and as I am new to Land Rovers I am looking for advice, options and tips on how to do this.

Yours,

Matt.

Go for it, a Series Landy just looks right with the wheel on there! Have a look on UTube, search for "Land Rover in the snow - and a great song!", Series driving with wheel on bonnet (also dished bonnet - see below). Search Ebay for 'Land Rover bonnet spare wheel carrier', there's usually at least one there. Fits on with pop rivets. Fits on the centre line, just far enough forward so you can open the bonnet without whacking the window with the tyre. If you can get a 'dished' bonnet to go with it, so much the better. There's a pretty scabby looking one on Ebay just now - search for 280478467033 - that might buff up with a bit of work. The expensive bit is the four rubber discs that the rim sits on - about £14 each new, so try and get these as part of the 'package'. Otherwise make them yourself from cut-down rubber door stops (99p!). (They are for the rim to sit on when the tyre is flat, so your bonnet doesn't get scraped.) Good luck - I've got an 88" with a 205 on the bonnet, and one with a 7.50 up there, OK I'm 6'1" and can see over them fine, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Ignore the weedy types with pipe-cleaner arms! :D Give me a shout if you get stuck. Nick.

PS. Just noticed "I am also considering putting it on the back using the independent frame as I hear that putting them on the back door is not to good for it" - took one of these off both 88"s, the door was starting to come apart, joins splitting etc.

You could get a roof rack and throw it on top out the way?

Got to agree though, bonnet is not the greatest - and yes doors do split if you hang it directly on the door

'throw' it on top:eek:, only if you're Geoff Capes!!!:p
back door is a pain as if you mount it central it gets right in the way of the handle:rolleyes:, swing away would be better

The series rear door frames don't look very strong, but I've been keeping my spare wheel (7.50 R16) on there for the last 4 years. If mine breaks I'll just beef up the door frame a bit. There just does not seem to be an ideal place to put the spare wheel. Putting the spare on the rear door seems to make the handling a bit worse. Even more annoying: I have to remove the spare wheel for towing some trailers.

I have mine on the bonnet - a standard bonnet - have done plenty of hard miles in it and the bonnet is still OK. Time will tell I guess but I dont think it will break.

I think it is a defender style one? Not sure tbh, cost a tenner from ebay:

£14 each for the rubber bushes? Forget that - I used some spare shock absorber bushes...they are not secured there, but the weight of the wheel holds them in place. Stayed like it for about 10k so far, so am quite happy!

If you door is half decent then it should hold up. I think some people put an extra hinge on?

I was thinking of doing just the opposite ! If you do Hull to lincolnshire in the landy ( god help you if you do ! ) Stop by Bolton and we can get the spanners out... your bits for mine !!!! I have the correct recessed bonnet by the way !

Hi there, just saw your thread. Mine has an actual bonnet thats designed to have a spare wheel on the front, its genuine land rover, but think you have to buy a bonnet built for carrying a spare wheel?

I had mine on the back door but it was just to heavy so I used the bracket it was sat on and drilled the bonnet and it sits there just fine. Spare on the bonnet is the best
