My apologise if this is covered often, but I can't find anything obvious after a search.

I've just had a good grands worth of work done to the old heap, and now that it's pretty solidish, rusted bulkhead aside, I fancy making it look a bit tougher.
It currently sits on white steel wheels, which I assume were factory fit. On these are 205 profile continental/michalin tyres, the more on-road biased ones. They look incredibly weedy, and must be changed immediately!

What are the options here? What's a good wheel/tyre combination - something that will toughen the car up, but not look like a toy. I'd prefer to keep them steel, I'm not a fan of the alloys. I would like to do some light off-roading, but it won't ever be anything too heavy.

Also, I'd obviously have to switch to an offroad tyre for the required look - how do they compare on the road to the thinner continentals currently on it, both in terms of grip and road noise (tbh, it can't get much worse, can it?>!).

Thanks

Disco steel wheels off e-bay for around £30 then 4 x Insa Turbo Saharas from Paddocks for around £245, around a tenner a wheel to have 'em fitted at your local independant tyre dealer. So call it £300 all in.

They're a decent mud terrain that's not too noisy on road and will handle most things you'll want to throw 'em at off road.

Cheers,

Got 'em in 235/85/16 on disco steels myself at the moment... no hesitation in recommending them at all. They go under the arches, needs a slight adjustment of the lock stops which takes all of 5 mins with a 17mm (err... I think) spanner if you really mess about.

Only thing you might want to avoid it consistently high motorway speeds as they heat up a bit and the tyre wear is somewhat quicker than when driven slower.

like adz said with the tyres, or the dakar version which are pretty much identical to the bfg MT (classic off-road style) but cheaper. I used to have them on my disco and it handled fine without too much drone at high speed.
If you want them to look rugged, but not too hardcore, just get the standard deepender size -265/75 r16
Wheel wise, get some modular wheels black/sliver/white 8x16 @30notes a foot
