trying to find out about the all to common problem with slipped liners on my 1999 4.6 p38, all ok at mo' no overheating, runs great, but has a tappity / lifter noise, been told liner slip noise?? help,,,

have a chat with this guy - slipped liner - Land Rover Zone - he has the same prob.

.Basically if it makes the noise when the motor is cold, it is a lifter. If it makes it when the motor is hot and tends to settle down at higher revs, it is a liner.
A bore camera is unlikely to spot a slipped liner.

cheers guys, it sounds tappity from cold definatley, if anything it gets slightly quieter when it warms up!, done a oil change and sounds better! what are the the outcome's from slipped liner's? , out of interest,, do they spell the end of the engine? hope mine is not this problem as she's a real gem at the moment,,

I had a liner go in my 4.0 discovery and yes it was replacement time, stuck in a top hat 4.6 instead

no little science if the metal is cold it is contracted yes?
when warm it expands so would be loose and noisy yes?
tapping noise worse when warm cam followers or rocker arms you have done a oil change and it is better so it is not a linner issue rockers and a folowers and a new cam simple good job im here or you would be doing a engine when it does not need one!
