I'm currently on the hunt for a decent LR322 but obviously want to spend as little as possible. I've found a nice tidy one in my price range so far but it's not without issues.

The headlights won't work, hazards only sometimes and tail lights are always on - this one interests me since a lighting ECU (if it is that) doesn't cost a lot - although I suspect it's a pig to replace.

Comments please - what could be wrong with car 2 ?
 
If the problem was that easy to solve it wouldn't still be there. There is something else at fault. Duck and cover.
 
I'm getting the same feelings for the L322 that I had for the P38 - way too many sensors and electronic gizmos to fail, far too hard to find the failed bits when they do fail.

I'm not sure I want a money pit, not on a tight budget for running it but I don't want to be either ...

It has no tax or MOT and needs a windscreen too - but I'd let my insurers take care of that.
 
I've had RR's since an early 2 door (1972), then a revised 4 door, then a 4 door soft dash, then a P38 - the car that made me go Land cruiser - I'm aware of the LCM's potential to screw you over since the P38 - that and suspension sensors, speed sensors, ABS ECU, ABS Unit, central locking faults, steering issues, air compressor failure, head gasket / liner issues, transfer box failure, general electronic faults as varied as the weather an audio / navigation system that isn't worth using as a door stop.

I don't run cars on a budget - any car - I don't do the breakdown thing and prefer to fix an item that shows even the slightest chance of failing.

Just because I want to buy one reasonably cheap doesn't mean I expect to run on a budget - wouldn't be looking at a 4.4 V8 if I did. I'm looking for the best bang for the buck and if I can save a grand and spend £100 to fix the cause because the current owner doesn't know any better then I'm up for it.

Out of interest where is the LCM on an L322 ?

If there just codes, they prob wont mean much to you or anyone else on here. It needs reading by something that can also decipher the codes

Insurance wont replace it without an mot and you wont get an mot with a fecked screen
 
Having read lots on here and being educated each time I do, my own thoughts on this are : The L322 is a different beast to previous RRs. Things that seem to be a simple fix on a P38 , et al, are not so simple on an L322. This is supported by others on here who have gone for ' best bang for buck' and post daily with issues.
Thus , to me, the L322 is not a beast to buy at cheapest price with problems. It is a beast to bought at best price for best vehicle. Otherwise you will spend your free time either on this forum or tearing your hair out because the 'easy fix for a really cheap price' , is anything but.

Well in the car stakes I'm no dummy, solved all the P38's issues - just got fed up of doing it. In a previous life I was a vehicle tech, City and Guilds and BTEC but they were done in the day where the only electronics was the radio, where the only sensors were your ears, eyes and nose, an era where we learned to fix stuff not simply replace it, to diagnose it using the grey matter not a damned PC. I'd like to bet that at least 80% of the faults are electrical in origin, sensor failures etc. With the lubricants and such available today there is absolutely no reason why a car shouldn't surpass 250,000 miles with ease - just takes appropriate maintenance at the appropriate time.

I do realise the L322 is a different animal hence the asking, I also understand that many non 'rocket scientists' can't afford repairs simply due to massive labour costs with the added insult of 20% VAT and profiteering on parts.

There are a good few selling 4.4's particularly because they can't afford the upkeep which has been pointed out isn't for the feint of heart. Many get themselves bent out of shape financially, run on a budget and it is downhill from there with an LR product - ANY LR product. I've enough LR experience to know this.

As it happens I tested the boot space in one yesterday and even with the seats down it isn't much better than the Disco so an L322 is probably off the shopping list, the load deck is simply too short.
 
The trick to any new LR product is buy the relevant diagnostics tools. You're ****ered without them.
