One of my mates had his old M-reg disco smashed by a red-light runner, and has replaced it with an R-reg 3-door (in damn good condition too.) We're a bit confused by the rear lights though. On the old one (1994) the rear pillar clusters had brake lights, tail lights, indicators, reverse and fog lights. The tail lights and indicators were duplicated in the rear bumper. On the R-reg though, the clusters on the pillars only have brake lights, reverse and fog lights, and it looks a bit strange at night with just the bumper lights on.

So: Is this a standard setup for this age of disco or is something broken?
Could the old light clusters (with indicators) be easily swapped over from the broken M-reg? I guess the flasher relay would also need to be changed so the trailer warning light behaves itself.
Could the indicator-less lights be modified to have a combined brake/tail light, leaving the indicators in the bumper?

I guess I'll get bribed into wiring the thing as he's hopeless with electrics :p

you can swap them but you need to run a wire for extra light, the connector only has the wires for whichever cluster is used , you dont need to swap flasher relay

Yes, standard UK spec setup, 1994MY did, early 95MY didn't, later 95MY, 96MY and 97MY did, but with the 1998MY the lamps were changed, so it seems your R reg is a 1998 model easily identified by its high level brake light.
The lamps were changed but the wiring loom wasn't so it's a direct swap.
Fitting the early upper tail lamps will give u back the stop/ tail and the indicator giving the total four indicators and four tail lights at night.
It depends of what the indicator relay rating is used in the 1998MY disco if has to be changed or not, as you will be adding 21w per side to the circuit, LR may have not bothered in changing it.

Sounds like it's a simple enough job then. I think the old disco is destined to become an off-roader (could theoretically be made roadworthy again) so it shouldn't be a problem to swap parts around until it works.
