Hi all me again,
I have two Discovery TD5s one 03 the other 04. The 03 has a very badly rusted chassis but a good engine the 04 is the other way round. I'm considering swapping the engines over. My question is this: is it possible to lift the engine out complete with the gearbox? I feel that it would be easier to separate gearbox/engine and to replace the clutch while both are "on the floor" . But I do expect that I'll have to raise the car to get the clearance for the gearbox to drop so that I get the engine gearbox combination at a steep enough angle for them to clear.
Over to you any tips, comments would be welcome.

Never lifted them together but I would expect it to be pretty hard if the bulkhead is still in place. If you take the seat unit out, the gear box can be lifted out the passenger side door.

I'd separate them purely because they are both very heavy and together you would need a monster engine lift along with lots of height.
I also don't see how you could lash them to lift as one and get the correct angles.

Thanks for your input. My thinking is that rather than have the struggle of lining up grarbox shaft into clutch platee in the car that it would be much easier out. Further I want to swop both engones and gearboxes. I will of course replace the clutch plates. Has anybody any suggestions as to what else I should check or replace while the engine and gearboxes are out.

I bought a little plastic and metal clutch lining up tool years ago and it made the job of alignment a doddle. Can't remember where I got it from but still have it somewhere in the depths of the workshop.

you want to split the engine and box , if you hang the box using an engine crane and a chain through the transmission tunnel you can lower box down to reach top bell housing bolts, and it makes the refitting a lot easier
