Hello,

Any views on whether for the same money, you would go fo a 120k miles TDV8 or an 80k mls TD6?

Thanks

If it's been looked after the TDV8 every time. Take a drive in both, they're chalk and cheese. If you drive the TDV8 first you'll think you've jumped in farmer Giles tractor by mistake when you drive the TD6:)

TDV8....

....Next question

Thinking of one or two... have seen a facelift 55 plt 80k mls 2 owner TD6, looks lovely, history sounds spot on/ very reassuring seller/ decent warranty... seriously thinking about it but never bought car so old with such mileage before.. and now you're all saying disgard TD6 notions for TDV8.. torn

I wouldn't say discard it. TD6 is still an excellent motor but old hat technology compared to the latest offerings. A TD6 at the right price is a good buy, but if it's similar in price to a TDV8 (even with higher miles) it's probably over priced.

My td6 had 136k when I bought it, it's now got 150k miles
Still going strong

Although I want to upgrade soon to the TDV8

:)

Thanks.. Do they actually look different or is it just the engine, the engine noise, the driving experience and the TDV8 badge that gives it away?

I take it the consensus is not to remap or free up power on the TD6 (so as to actually prolong gearbox life etc)?

Yet another thread asking the same thing, worded differently. The answers you have already been given (and in the many other threads existing under the search function) won't change just because you move the words around.

Nope, gotta disagree there. It's called getting an opinion and unbiased advice. If at first you don't get the correct answers, then ask, ask and ask again until you do.

Get the TD6. It seems it is the one you're leaning towards or you would've taken the advice offered and get the TDV8.

Would be worth keeping 3k in reserve for the gearbox though. Most definitely worth getting the gearbox oil and filter changed. They were sold as sealed for life, but that has killed many GM gearboxes.

Oh and change the crank case breather as they are prone to clogging up (2.0_hippo has made a guide on this here).

Toyota's aren't without their problems though. So far my uncle's 4.2 TD Amazon has eaten a gearbox, corroded most of its own electrics through poorly cited water drains. Only had it eight months at its only done 70k!

under-stressed I suppose, they used that 4.2 six cylinder for twenty odd years just keep modding it. They are really over priced though. They can be as much as double the cost of a similar vintage Range Rover.

The Toyota we hav- had at work has got a nudge over 100k on the clock (2.2TD Avensis or something similar). It is being scrapped because the engine has shafted itself. It goes through 4 litres of water in 15 minutes.

They aren't the bastions of reliability they once were.
