Went pay n play on sunday and got stuck, the guy draggin me out pulled me into a tree and it broke a couple of light lenses on the back.

Went to motor factors today and bought some replacements and i was thinking shall i do it here or when i get home. Anyway i have a look at it and see the bulb is loose and blown so i take it out and decide to sort it out later,

But landy wont start unless there is a bulb in the brake light holder, i cant belive that not having a bulb in there will stop it turning over, have any of you come across this?

Does the starter turn the engine over or is the ignition key dead? it could be an earth problem but sound very misterious. Make sure the engine is earthed correctly, Mine is earthed at the gearbox with a heavy earth strap direct from the battery.

This is a common fault with new vehicles that use fibre optics instead of wires but I've never heard of it in a landy before.

It's not an automatic is it?

ere Ratty - on a similar note - had a few motors come in with defective lights - bulb is fine, and replacing it dont do any good - seems to be duff wire or fuse, but other bulb on same circuit is OK. Had it with side lights and reversing lights - any ideas. I bin sending peeps to the stealers for diagnostics.:(

It's usually a faulty light switch. It wouldn't be ford focus's by any chance would it?;) I usually find that if you use a power probe to test the fuses you will find that the headlight dipped beam or sidelight fuses lose continuity. (they become completely dead. neither earth nor live). Applying a quick burst of live power to the fuses will often get them working again but this is only a temporary measure.

Thanks for the replies
No Ratty its not an auto, the ignition lights come on and glow plug light as normal just does nothing when i turn the key to last position, Its a 1990 200tdi 90 so no fancy electrics. The only thing that is different apart from the busted light is it is covered in clay/mud from devilspit and i am wondering if its affected the earth strap and is a coincidence that removing the bulb stopped it working.

I am gonna jet wash it tomorrow and sort out the lights and see what happens
